There's a huge amount of Church bootlegs but some of it are crappy. One thing that surprised me when I listened to bootlegs from 1988 for example is that it sounds sometimes better than some show recorded with high-tech material of today. Some bootlegs are roomy, I don't know why ? I tapped myself a show of the Pixies back to 1990 with a walkman kept secret in my trousers underware to avoid security, the result was average but a good souvenir of a great show.I know I digress.

It all comes down to the mics you're running and where you're recording from in the venue. I run some Core Sound Binurals and they sound "roomy" but up close they can recreate the exact vibe of a show, 2004 SXSW is one of my all time great recordings made with CSB's. I ran them at the first NYC show from a distance and they sounded really roomy, not a great recording, IMO. Invest in good mics and you can pull some great recordings.
