I'm not going to post a review as such, I'll leave that to the more talented who will no doubt give a far better description of the night than I possibly could. As I watched SK stride out looking like he was about to go into a fight, I knew we where in for a treat. SK did not disappoint, the energy he put into the show was awesome. One of the best performances I have ever seen by SK. it was that good. From the opener Sealine to the closer Tanty, we were treated to some real gems. The highlight for me was hearing Happy Hunting Ground by the orchestra. The curve ball of the night would have to be the lads playing The Dissllusionist, I loved it, with Steve just about covering every part of the stage, running here, throwing his arms about there. Tim on the drums was once again phenomenal, Peter's solo on Unguarded Moment a joy to watch from the two meters away that I was sitting and MWP taking the lead on Spark was inspirational. A Fantastic night and one that I wont forget. Can't wait to hear what other people made of the night. Cheers Wayne

The three standing ovations (seriously, the whole of the Opera House Audience, standing, going nuts, three times) was a testament to the quality of the show. Pantechnicon Posts: 144 (04/10/2011 17:26) Glow Worm Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	well just when ya think you've seen it all, just when you think this band can't possibly get better at this, they must have reached a kinda plateau point, ye off little faith.... the opera house with the george ellis orchestra could have gone two ways, it could have gone all pomp and circumstance or it could have been subtle and understated in rich tones and textures, i mean how many bands just fuck up using an orchestra but tonight was the best church concert i have ever seem. firstly it was great to see the use of backing vocalist, the two singers added a texture that i think has been necessary, that feminine balance just adds a lovely layer over some of these songs and again never overstated. here to the orchestra never really engulfed the band, just adding layers of sound embedded into the lush arrangements and subtle architecture of each piece. it was a spectacular setlist, covering some classics but offering some more obscure songs, particularly the 'disillusionist' which was my favourite and 'never before.' the background visuals were obtuse patterns and landscapes that never once distracted from the stage. lighting was a bit strange and somewhat erratic but maybe they needed that for the cameras. so the band are perfect, the sound excellent, the set consisted of metropolis, seachange, almost with you, ripple, never before, already yesterday, myrrh, milky way, tantalised, an (unknown to me ) lost australian classic from 1969, a tiny bit of your still beautiful baby, reptile, grind, anchorage happy hunting ground, the disillusionist, never before, invisible, and possibly many others that i can't remember beings somewhat still shell shocked. it's impossible to know where this band can go because they have travelled a long hard and wild road taking us into all sorts of new territory but i hope and pray that they keep travelling and making music and writing because it's really good to have something of this quality around in these ages of disposable throwaway mindless drivel, here is something to aspire towards, to enrich our lives and keep us looking forwards. well done church, thank you for an amazing night. yeah i never seen the opera house audience go nuts like that before. maybe we are in the clever country, finally.

There's not really much to add that the Captain hasn't stated, but here goes... Amazing synergy between the band and orchestra. The Killah's theatrics were entertaining, it was like he was channeling Nick Cave during the Disillusionist. The only minor quibble I have is that the electric guitars were mixed a little low during the first half of the set. Would love to have heard MWP's e-bow solo on Myrrh a bit clearer. The second half of the set was near perfect. This was really a huge thing to pull off and band and orchestra did it well. Speaking of which, Tantalised was much tighter than the ARIAs, with everyone taking their lead from MWP. It really shone as the outro. Already Yesterday and Lost were the two songs which really benefitted most from from this format. Invisible was just beautiful, Never Before pastoral and Floydian and the space rock version of Reptile really shone. The "lost Australin classic" was Mr Guy Fawkes by the Dave Miller Set, which sounds like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ciM1bSV_0qs was another highlight (any mod want to embed this, as I'm too lazy). I would love to see the band release their own version with the orchestra in tow. Other than that, it was good to briefly catch up with some of the regular Church crowd.
