'The Whole World Changed' First Album Review...... | ||
|
The Failed - CD - The Whole World Changed (www.myspace.com/thefaileduk) The Failed are slimmed down (memberswise only!!) Worcester psycho-rockers Dudes Of Neptune and 'The Whole World Changed' is their first release as a trio. Kinda early Hawkwind in its feel but with contemporary innovation and futuristic vibes the work is, and I quote The Failed's Andy Lee, 'quite a rollercoaster ride' of experimental music for the thinking man's head. This album is as brash as it is compelling; there's quite a lot going on and it's raw feel belies its apparent loving conception and well nurtured gestation. Sassy guitars and searing keys mingle and meld, kerranging riffs rise and fall, sizable beats ebb and flow as ballsy but totally fitting vocals and spoken words fill just about every other available space - it's well thought out, nicely assembled and 'kin well executed and the end result is pretty damn tasty if perhaps a little obtuse and challenging. But hey, The Failed don't do conventional or the expected, these dudes aint budding popsters, The Failed are mature alt-rockers with an abundance of targeted attitude and more than enough originality to make it happen - and here it certainly does happen! 'The Whole World Changed' is, at times, dark and brooding but effortlessly and seamlessly things often turn towards much a lighter but no less poignant side - a proper Pandora's Box of sonic thrills and spills rammed with big dynamics and gut churnin' electric outpourings. This is bloody good work! 'The Whole World Changed' isn't gonna be everyone's brew of choice but for expo-heads and those willing to listen and allow themselves to be persuaded there's a whole shed-load of cool stuff happening here. 'The Whole World Changed' is a flux-like composite of sound and audio texture that's not actually retro but does kinda lean towards the exp-psycho Kraut-rock thing of the early 70's but with sufficient 21st century aplomb to make it current and somehow acceptable. One to max out on db's methinks - but stand well back cuz once you've figuratively lit the blue touch-paper the whole thing simply explodes in yer face without any warning. The guys have done good!! What's next guys? Peter J Brown aka toxic pete
