I’m a relatively new to the band even though I’m old enough to be one of the fans from their early period. Really liked THAT SONG back in ’88 but I was in college at the time, funds were tight I suppose, or more accurately they were spent on other groups (namely Depeche Mode and U2). Fast forward about 15 years and I watched the “Rabbit Movie” as Steve calls it. I enjoyed the movie but really loved the 80s music even more, and set out to buy the cd. Found out it was such a low budget production that they couldn’t afford make an actual soundtrack cd, just a score (subsequently an actual soundtrack was made in England later when the movie became a hit). At any rate, I tracked down the various artist “best of” cds so that I could make my own Donnie Darko cdr, and then proceeded to play that cdr endlessly for a couple of years, while ignoring the source material. That could have been the end of this story…
But for whatever reason, one day I pulled out “Under The Milky Way – The Best of the Church” and actually listened to the other songs on there. I was taken aback at how good it was. The early songs had a pleasant jangly pop sound/feel but it was the middle period that stood out to me, and in particular the songs Myrrh and Ripple totally knocked me out. Why didn’t I listen to this cd before???
So you know what happens next: started buying up the back catalog and eagerly awaiting new releases. Now I’ve finally caught them live on the 30th anniversary tour and just began scouring for solo cds and collaboration projects!
