Sorry that Numbers-Invisible had to happen at round 1. Software I use is build that way that the first and last team has match at round 1. Usually The Church has pretty good openers and closers...

i hereby confess that i consider Song For The Asking the most boring musical utterance my favourite band ever released, one of the very few songs I can't stand. Actually, the only song I can't stand, sounds like a Dire Straits B-Side gone wrong. It's really really grating. The //U remix is SO much better (love it)!!!

Purchased this less than 12 months ago as part of my major Church catch up. This one has taken me the longest out of Refo, MATS, HoB, FY, ULTC and U23 to really connect with. I even thought of it as mostly dreary adult oriented rock. I was expecting to love it from early-on, based mostly on what I'd read here. Don't think I'll ever manage to suppress expectations. Learning what Radiance is about somehow helped to open up the whole album to me. Finally, six weeks ago I was doing a solo bushwalk with an MP3 player brimming with Churchy goodness. My playing of AENT then really worked for me.

I find the sound quality of AENT unusual. Played quietly, or on my cheap stereo it seems muffled. Up loud on the good 5 speaker stereo it's fine, even great. I love the 'come on!' and other noises during the climax of Numbers. They had me looking over my shoulder on that bushwalk.

i really like this album, and always have.... so rather than just voting this time around, i'm also going to pen a few thoughts on each "better" song per round, to try and articulate what i like about it or just random impressions…. which means i'll have to think up nine different things to say about "Radiance" and eight about "After Everything"…. or maybe the other way 'round…. since i really don't see myself voting against either of them until a head-to-head matchup forces a choice…

Invisible -- a lot is made of the Church having consistently great "opening" songs, but i think their choice of "closing" songs is really more reliable…. "Invisible" being no exception… when i saw the band play the other night in Seattle, Kilbey mentioned that the recording studio in Sweden sat next to railroad tracks, and that you could hear it on this song…..and there it is, the doleful clanging of that little crossing signal, as our heroine speeds along toward a vague horizon….

Reprieve -- always makes me think of the Beatles for some reason…. i think it's the mellotron that kicks in at 0:52, or the McCartney-esque bass line in the bridge at 1:20….

The Awful Ache -- interesting turn of setting here. Kilbey spends years exploring ancient times, forgotten worlds, outer space -- and then suddenly discovers Latin America…. Mormon missionaries, Catholic iconography, and sad, sad Esmerelda…

After Everything -- i've always thought this should have been the first song on the album...

Radiance -- a Kilbey fable worthy of P=A….

Hmmm, i'm going to have to go with After Everything....

And this isn't much easier!!! Radiance vs Chromium...
Chromium please.

Some people say that Chromium doesn't fit in well with the rest of the album.
I disagree - i think it works really well!
Tis a shame, though, that at gigs Marty doesn't sing the chorus in quite the same way as he does on the album, where he really belts it out!

Song For The Asking is important for me because of a particular person and what they meant to me when I first heard it.
To me it will always be "their" song, for better or worse...well, worse to be honest. But it remains important to me.

special record to me as after its release the church came last time to Italy, and I went to the Milan gig with my wife who had never seen them live. important to share with her, we were at a bar unworthy of such greatness, but watchinh them with no more than 50 pp, as if they were in my living room, was still a magic feeling I still recall as if it were yesterday
