My current listening tends towards The Church (obviously), Radiohead, Elbow, Doves.... but I'm up for anything new and energizing, but not angry, screaming music.

I work out at a gym several mornings per week. The most convenient time for my workouts coincides with a fitness program for Korean and Vietnam era veterans, so the gym's satellite radio is set to the "best of the 70s and 80s" channel and volume is low. I need some more motivating music and don't have much time to find new and interesting music. If I asked my real-life friends, I'd either get 80s hair bands (eww) or Lady Gaga (also eww). Help me, please!

Oh nothing against Lady Gaga!! She helped me through MY workout today.
best workout music by The Church is JAMMED!!! Try to pump your iron to the infinite repetitions of Interlock and the Sex Song! my Gym hits: NEU! - First album Fuck Buttons - Tarot Sport (highly energizing trance music from heaven that even rock fans should love) Best of Motown singles! |

I'll admit that I'm not familiar with the complete works of Lady Gaga. I'm sure she has at least one song I'd secretly like.
The Mellow Hits of Fleetwood Mac on the gym's radio didn't make me want to increase my pace from slow walking to running my ass off. Must. Move. Faster. |

Thanks for asking. Here is a couple of suggestions what to fill your iPod with. I have considered that you want:
- New modern stuff - Not exactly straight forward rock. Slightly left of the field like the Church and Doves - Not too many tempo changes during the song= good for gym And my recommendations are: ![]() Delays: You See Colours Indie from UK. Their first album modernised the Byrds but this one added a lot of high energy disco and dance beat. I hope falsetto singing doesn´t bother you? It can be still considered something like Doves but only more youthful and energized. This album, their second, might be good for gym. ![]() Manic Street Preachers: Everything Must Go Okay, it´s 90´s but I have been digging this lately. Anthemic, sweeping, intelligent lyrics, sometimes too intelligent lyrics and still manages to rock big time. Delete couple of ballads and you are set for a good experience. Kevin Carter, The Girl Who Wanted To Be God, Australia...there is a lot of excellent rock anthems. Remember that this might be inspire you to sing along, which might make Vietnam vets looking at you. ![]() R.E.M. - Accelerate Name of the album gives some advice what it can do to you. Want the good old R.E.M. but in a faster package than ever before? Here it is. Remove track 7 with some of the bonus songs, like Airliner, and it´s all set to rock. I have no idea if you like these. I´ll think of more today.

How about going shamelessly for something slightly more mainstream? Something simple and not so difficult? Let´s see if these are something...
![]() Foo Fighters: Greatest Hits Drop the filler, get the hits. Anthemic and sure to get you pumped up. ![]() ![]() Killers: Hot Fuss / Day & Age Mainstream rock but very good. Hot Fuss is bound to have many songs to create some motion. Day & Age is the slighly misunderstood 3rd album. It has titles like "Spaceman" and "A Dirtland Fairytale" which means that it has some spacy elements but it´s still mainstream rock. ![]() Franz Ferdinand: Franz Ferdinand Okay, it is slightly more twisted stuff with artschool esthetics but it has potential. If "Take me Out" and "The Dark Of Matinee" won´t get any kind of movement in you then forget it. I hope these had at least something usable.

Killers, FF will work!
And get the 1st Editors album. Nice thumping! ![]() I actually stopped to listen while working out, trying to concentrate on what the olde body is telling me...but that'd be my choice.

So how´s it going at the gym? The Killers doing it for you or why you are silent?
![]() Here is a list a guy has compiled for gym.sessions. Pretty exotic choices at least to me. I thought Dirty Projectors and The Decemeberists were crap gym music but I might be wrong. From that list I would say that Blur´s The Great Escape seems the most promising. It´s pretty cheerful and upbeat stuff and what I remember the album is quite consistent and not too many slow parts. ![]() Isn´t that The Great Escape cover a poster for healthy and sporty life? 4-5 slower songs would have to go but Blur might be indeed just the kinda stuff for gym. All their early period albums are pretty good now that I run through them. Poppy, sporty and with an intelligent twist too. Later period stuff went too artsy and cranky. I have to admit that I never use any music at the gym because they usually blast local radio stations there and that´s either metal, hard rock, rock or dance pop. Using an MP3 player would be overkill as the other loud music would be audible too.

Thanks for the suggestions... I asked the question and then promptly got too sick to go to the gym. Am trying to recuperate but we are hosting visiting relatives this weekend so I'm not hopeful. Cough, sniffle.
Maybe on Sunday I will have time and energy to sort through, find the ones we own, and download some new tunes. I most need my own music on Mondays and Wednesdays. I take classes w/ music provided by the instructors on Thursdays and Fridays. Thanks again, and keep them coming! I can't complain about the quiet/bland music the gym's stereo is playing though. I was told that some of the veterans were near 90 years old!

It´s been almost a month since this was up. Can´t you at least somehow reveal what stuff you thought was promising? Or are you still too tired to go to gym or listen to gym music?

Okay, let´s try one more time. You are a really tough nut to crack...
![]() Even if you don´t go ever again to gym to do some serious weight lifting you could have an opinion if some of these was any good or at least thinkable for gym. If so, then what it is? Come on, come on, gimme one! I don´t mind at all if it´s Fando´s rec.

I'm working on it! I need to trade computers to access our music library. We have a bunch of the music suggested so far - Interpol, Editors, Killers, Foo Fighters. Frankly, I've lost track of what CDs we own, which seems ridiculous but it's true. I need to listen to some of the ones we don't own so I can supplement and honestly, I keep putting it off because I'm not able to get my weightlifting day in the schedule consistently.

Thanks. At least couple of those hit the right marks then. If you already have them then that´s cool.
Killers, it´s not that bad. Okay for many things.

Just in case you care: my weightlifting-substitute workout this weekend involved digging and transplanting 4 shrubs and completely digging out and removing 3 others. All shrubs were approx. 10 years old. I only asked for assistance with one.

Hi,
On my ipod currently, I like a lot of the music that's thrashing & screaming really...lol, quite the opposite of my personality IRL. Have you ever tried The Damned? The Cramps? The Stranglers? The Slits? The Distillers? NOFX? Theyr! (written differently in Icelandic but, I don't have the Icelandic lettering here on my keyboard). Or, are you more of a new-wave/post punk woman? Just asking...I enjoy those genre's too. Have fun... |

I'm more of the latter, really. My favorite music tends to be complex and a bit dreamy, but that doesn't make me want to get up and run, or lift more weight, or chop out the remaining 6 big irritating shrubs in my garden.
