I saw Grabiny Zameczek, or "GZ", as everyone in Poland calls them, playing 2 years ago. Fantastic stuff - first song took 4 minutes to build up in a vast stream, and then went all glassy and fragile, with an old sad polish folk song played on a violin. Haunting!!

Today on my desk, a legendary filipino persona, Abaday Abalahin "General Heliodoro Castillo" Macadengdeng, the godfather of Tagalog Stringband Reggae Folk Punk Filipino Humppa. I LOVE the album title!!

Chrome, the last one made me laugh out loud. It's SO real!! One of those bands...another one...yeah - though make no mistake - Skipton have at least three cool songs out - "War is not its own end", "Catastrophic slide into absolute damnation" and "The one you started with" - great for driving!

Great cover! Goes together well with the title. I expect the music to be pretty extreme, though still pop...like a combination of Muse and Bloc Party. Bands from those small towns use to have a megalomaniac blown-up sound...i mean, Muse are from fucking Teignmouth. The problem with bands like SKIPTON is there are so many of them. All grew up on Madchester, MBV, they have their Joy Division best-of and they're trying to be brutally pop. I like it, but they tend to be one-trick-ponies.

BTW, Joseph Donnelly SUCKED! I read he is actually a burger flipper with artsy ambitions, and since his girlfriend left him, he's releasing all those wussy songs. Yeah, there is no cat. There is no pussy, either. Not for you! Sounds like Simon and Garfunkel on Valium with Yoko Ono as background singer; the way he is straining his voice to reach an "emotional" effect makes him sound like a tortured hamster! "Behind my back", "When she returns the darkness will fade", "Here alone", "Died a little death", "True soul", "If you don't come back", "Standing on the bridge" - awful awful awful songs!! Go and jump, asshole!

I forgot where i read the interview with Wojciech Grabiny and Stanislaw Zameczek, but it was a great read. Those guys are really up to something.

Steve Cooper raise to infamous obscurity in the late 70es as a "punk poet", lost his marbles in the 80es and now he resurfaced as a gritty, edgy, vitriolic songwriter. Dave Fielding and Reg Smithies of the Chameleons play guitar in his all-star band, Tom Verlaine guest-starring on 2 tracks. imagine the intersection of Patti Smith, The Chams and Motörhead, with a cool urban Television-sheen...The rat is more a very very cool cat...
