The Decemberists "Hazards of Love" album is my most recent discovery; have fallen in love with this album. It is absolutely majestic & i'm sure would appeal to "Church" followers.

You people listen to a lot of new music, doncha?
I can barely keep up with the last 50 years of pop-and-rock. I second the props already given to Mummers & Duckworth Lewis (still filthy about The Ashes, but) and Decemberists. Great records. Grizzly and Antlers didn't do it for me after a few listens, although Hospice broke my fucking heart when I heard it for the first time. Glaring omission from lists: The Clientele - Bonfires on the Heath. Released in October, this baby is my current favourite record. All Church-heads are bound to love it. Atmosphere, heart, artful, tuneful, lovely...! No Harry Flowers release last year, which kind of bummed me out a bit. Never mind. Apparently he's releasing a proper album this year. My main squeeze for 2009 however was... ...The entire Kinks back-catalogue (notably the complete Pye Albums collection). Hadn't listened to "Arthur" in full before (I am a late adopter). What a record! ("Opportunities are available in all walks of life in Australia....") But listen to Bonfires, people. It'll slay ya. xx V |

Right Harry!! The Clientele are so light and sublime, they're almost forgotten instantly. This is a beautiful album. Their song "BICYCLES" is one
of the best anyway...

Like I said, I adore Bonfires; earlier records are a little disappointing by contrast - not quite as 3D, if you know what I mean. The Clientele clearly fit
into the 'maturing band' category. v

Just listened to The Clientele a few times - and love it! Sometimes it instantly reminded me of Mellow Drunk and Leigh Gregory, and guess what, googling around I found that Leigh Gregory has been a live support act on their tour.

I read Alasdair Maclean was contemplating folding the band. I guess we can't all be in The Church....
...I hope this doesn't happen any time soon: I've got tickets to see them in NYC at the Bowery in March...and hope to see them at ICA in London in April as well. ![]() |

Is there something like a deadline for Best Of lists of past years? I'll definitely have to revamp my list because if I'd known about this one last year it would have made it into the top 5 (or maybe 7):
"Wye Oak" with their album "The Knot". I just recently came across them. Brilliant stuff! I guess Churchheads gonna like it. |

Since the time I did my list I want to add couple of new ones to the 2009 list. I found them all here, so thanks to you for all your recommendations!
The Antlers: Hospice The Dcemberists: Hazards of Love Engineers: Three Fact Fader

I have tried to separate the actual "votes" and the other chit chat. Here is what the 2009 albums look like. After the usual suspects Yo La Tengo and The Antlers got the most "votes" (5) followed by Engineers and Doves (4). I don´t think there is any deadline?
Yo La Tengo - Popular Songs - 5 Engineers - Three Fact Fader - 4 Neko Case - Middle Cyclone - 3 Howling Bells - Radio Wars - 2 + 1 from 2008
1 mention: Wye oak - The Knot
