Not the jazz/Kilbey meaning, but the way of making music. I've been on a huge jazz binge for the last weeks. on heavy rotation: King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band - The 1922 Recordings. Classical New Orleans Jazz. Almost 90 years old...wow. Gene Krupa - Drummin Man. The Richard Ploog of Big Band swing. Miles Davis - The Birth Of Cool. When Bebop became Cool... Miles Davis - Bitches Brew. A once-in-a-lifetime record. Keith Jarrett - Paris and London concerts. Chick Corea - Children's Songs. Amazing record... That is to say many of its avenues and alleys are exclusive and often well-guarded. So I'm passionate about certain artists and styles while I'd just as soon listen to a dog fights as I would, say, Charles Mingus or most 'fusion'. You know I was nearly named Miles (after Miles Davis), but Dad nixed it. Gene Krupa 'Sing, Sing, Sing' always rocks me. Personally I migrate toward the big band era. I want to hear the trumpet of Harry James, the harmonies of the Andrews Sisters, and Duke Ellington. These powerful ensembles may not have riffed as freely as the smaller acts, but they created such a sound! The Les Paul Trio (doesn't get much smaller than that) kicks my ass beautifully too though. Les Paul's jazz is great place to explore. Bossa Nova is jazz as far as I'm concerned also, and I love it dearly. Not a big California jazz fan, but I keep Chet Baker's recordings in constant rotation here. His flugelhorn (and trumpet) tone is perfect. across the endless sky we are deployed

I'm discovering more and more of the stuff just between bebop and cool... I know nothing about jazz really... I've heard some old, old music (scratchy recordings from the 1920s, I think, transferred to CD) that sound very interesting, very upbeat. I also have some Miles Davis, Coltrane, and Mingus... but I'm left sort of cold by their stuff, don't know how to crack it. I'd like to learn more about it, get my ears more accustomed to it. But I worry that I've spent too many years listening to music in a different way and therefore am just never really going to get it. I also worry that I'm forever biased against jazz because of bad fusion stuff that unfairly gets labelled as jazz. Any recommendations for what I might give a listen? Tips on how to listen, or what to listen for, what to follow in the music? I think I tend to get lost.

Make a Coltrane station, a Julie London Station, a Glen Miller station, a Les Paul Trio station, and an Ornette Colman station. Unfortunately, as I'm usually listening in the car or during dinner, I'm not paying close attention to the names of the artists. I am woefully uninformed.

It's not pop. it's not 3 chords and the truth. it's more like lots of modes, scales, 108 (augmented minor 5ths and dim.7ths) chords and the truth. I don't take it personally, by the way. I enjoy jazz, certain eras more than others, but those purists have been right -- I've never "gotten" A Love Supreme.

Not all jazz fans adore "A Love Supreme", just like not all rock fans love Led Zeppelin. Many of my more learned friends are in raptures over Pat Metheny, but I just don't get it. And nobody ever seems to mention the genius that is Andy Summers. Maybe people just think of The Police and leave it there ?

I mean - I have studied music for five years, and I have a bloody Master's Degree. I know a lot of unnecessary but interesting things about music theory since the early middle ages, and I can analyze a lot of stuff in detail, because my job was to teach that. In the end, i can look at artworks from a very very abstract POV. if you want me, i can do a harmonic analysis of Lustre (that's a pretty complex song). Now I had the task to teach history of jazz to a class of 9th graders, and tried to make them enjoy a kind of music that is as strange/offbeat to them like Folk Songs Of Beteigeuze. So I decided to take them on a journey....we started in the swamps of Louisiana, in the jungle, took a look at country and american folk, went to the dark corners of storyville, enjoyed classy dinners with big bands, went to bebop sessions with tired but smokin' musicians after the rehearsals...kept cool with miles, freaked out with Ornette...enjoyed the impressionistic cascades of erroll garner as well as the stoned hours of Bitches Brew... and it all made sense from that historical/chronological perspective. Theory-free (i'll save that for next year ) - and all i can say is we sussed the music with our souls. Noone needs sophists trying to make an esoteric science of jazz... ...because strange is what we need The Fandorin Foto Files

As for overanalysis of jazz / blues from a revisionist standpoint, I totally agree. Not that it's not great fun to do however ! To think that the Delta / early jazz guys made all this wonderful music, with (at best) rudimentary instruments and no theory whatsoever is frankly mindblowing. I teach guitar for a living. But do any of my students care about any of that ? Well, one or two to be fair. The rest of them are more keen to emulate the dizzy heights of fucking Green Day.

Run, Beethoven, run!! Of course it's fun to analyze music, to try to find out about the nuts and bolts...and what is the Womb else than a 10 year analysis project-in-progress. Then there is Charlie Parker who was a brilliant theoretic...a very erudite man, and wow, how all his knowledge transforms into a stream of magic. It´s almost like jazz for people who don´t like jazz because you know it´s cool even if jazz is not your game. He drums impatient fingers on the chrome and on the leather
