UTMW Commonwealth Games version |

Does anyone have a copy of UTMW released on the 06 Commonwealth Games CD (this one http://homepage.mac.com/fipster/church/compilations/2006-comm-games-opening.html)
that they'd be willing to share? Just realised this glaring omission from my collection!

I have some sort of video of it, which means that I have a MP3 of it soon. Do you want it ripped from the actual CD?

I think I have the video of it somewhere too but I think the cd contained a studio version if I'm not mistaken (which I may be).

Hi all,
I ripped the audio from the video way back when. I really had hoped to strip out the voiceover, but I couldn't do it without ruining the flow of the intro and the ending. In the end, I've grown to like the narration - it reminds me just how big an event this really was! http://rapidshare.com/files/292198687/Under_The_Milky_Way.mp3 Greg |

I have now listened the live Commonwealth version over and over and it´s really grandiose and, well, incredible in many ways. The introduction is cool:
- Here is The Church and their classic song Under The Milky Way ! and then it starts almost normally but the big orchestra adds some swanky touches shere and there. Raise the curtain in Melbourne, Steve sings, it sends a totally different vibe than usually with that little change. The big touches are added here and there and it´s like Heyday orchestrations X4. It´s really lavish and sounds friggin expensive. At 3.00 there is a nice fairy dust part and the big choir really makes it go to another dimension at 4:30. paa paa pap paa...gradually the song loses it´s form and it´s just totally spacy Church from another dimension. The best is saved to last. The narrator says (and this is so surreal from audio only): At the end the spiral pathway to stars is laid... The boy- a final moment of magic to come... A confusing dream - lets face it, they usually are ( ) - is over
His friend, THE DUCK, is real - to him! (that ending is just pure
blockbuster dadaism!)
Get it. It´s priceless stuff!

Thanks for that Greg. That sounds really good actually complete with Barry Davies' commentary! Does anyone know if this is actually the same recording as
on the CD - I assume it would have no Barry at least on the CD but is it a live recording or a studio effort on the disc?

After a bit of digging it does seem to be a live recording on the CD. http://www.musicweb-international.com/film/2006/Jun06/cwgames06.html

Glad you're all enjoying it!
I could live without the choral bits at the end, but the orchestration really is gorgeous - understated, creative and perfectly suited and in service to the song - it makes an already magical song all that much more so. I especially love all the tinkly/chimey/xylophony sounds and the swelling horns that come in after the solo. One only wishes that the band and the orchestrator could get together on a new song or two. The Church has used orchestration throughout their career, but Happy Hunting Ground is the only piece that comes to mind that's close to being as effective as the Commonwealth Games' arrangement of UTMW. |

I don't know anything about the CD, but I have heard a demo version of the arrangement that was recorded I think during rehearsals. It could be that
version which has ended up on the CD.
I'm gonna download that mp3 (thanks Greg) and compare them. |

Dugster, did you realise there's an mp3 of it up on the discography page you linked from? It's definitely a different version to the live one Greg put up.
