I love the song that opens this album,"Rutti." It just goes on and on and on and is very mesmerizing. I think that the rest of the album is, however, self-indulgent and rather difficult to listen to.

The one Slowdive album that has really held up well for me over the years, in spite of its terrible title, is Souvlaki. I wonder if it won't sound too shoegazer-ish (and thus dated) to you Chrome? But it has a wonderful mix of styles and sounds. Back in the day I would listen to this album on repeat for months on end...

The first Mojave 3 album, Ask Me Tomorrow, is pretty good. I like that Rachel Goswell, the woman who played bass and sang some of the Slowdive songs, does some of the vocals. When she sings you might think you are listening to the Cowboy Junkies or Mazzy Star. Unfortunately though, some of the songs sound very overwrought to me, as if the band is trying too hard to make these very overly emotional country-music tinged songs.

I tend to feel similarly about almost all of the Mojave 3 albums. There is some wonderful stuff on them. But there's also a lot of stuff that I find it very difficult to get through. If I had to recommend one album, I'd go with Spoon And Rafter.

So to sum up (!), these are the Neil Halstead-related albums that everyone needs: Slowdive's Souvlaki, Mojave 3's Spoon And Rafter, and Halstead's Sleeping On Roads.

The soundtrack is entitled " I Am The Elephant." There's also a good collection of other unreleased songs entitled "I Saw The Sun." Both are worth a listen and are still floating around online, if anyone's interested.

I saw them play in Washington DC in 93 or 94. They opened for Blur, if I remember correctly, and here too they obviously stole the show.

I love long songs. It could be crap, but if it's 20+ minutes I'll still probably try to tell you it's good. Oh my!

Chrome, parts of Souvlaki sound a lot like that EP. But there are many more interesting sounds on the album as well. One version of the album (Japanese, US?) has an additional three tracks, two of which are really good. Try to get this one.

Seriously though, it's one of those albums that probably does take a while to crack. I hate when people tell me that ("oh, you'll understand after your 500th listen..." and that sort of crap. I mean, isn't that an indication the music just isn't that good?). But here it's kind of true! It takes a little while to get underneath the layer of haze that keeps all the songs sounding the same. Once you do that (if you can do that?) I think you'll find a lot of interesting ripples. I love 40 days (Lali Puna does a good cover of this song too), Souvlaki Space Station, Mellon Yellow. Infact, you know, this album kind of reminds me of P=A. I think it has a similar feel...
