However, for me "Operetta" is not the proper closer for this album, it's the 17 minute epic "So That Love May Find Us," which is of course on the Pangaea ep, but it's also the last song on the vinyl version. I can't imagine a better way for them to end this wonderful album, but I'm sure STLMFU wasn't included on the CD edition because of time constraints. I don't really understand what all the complaints about the mastering are all about. Overall the sound quality is far from perfect, but the mix in my opinion is excellent for this album: dreamy, soft, densely atmospheric - I think high-impact dynamics would have been detrimental to the mood of 23.

I give it three and 1/2 stars. I will listen to it, but it will never be in constant rotation. I think it's great that some people think it's the best. Maybe for them it is. There is enough in the Church catalog to satisfy all fans... I like Deadman's hand and Anchorage is a new classic. Forget Yourself\Beside Yourself and other recordings of that era were the best of their career so far, and I think they are even better than P=A or any of the older classics. The hand gets its name from the legend of it being the five-card-draw hand held by Wild Bill Hickok at the time of his murder (August 2, 1876). It is accepted that the hand included the aces and eights of both the black suits; although his biographer, Joseph Rosa, says no contemporary citation for his hand has been found, the "accepted version is that the cards were the ace of spades, the ace of clubs, two black eights (clubs and spades), and either the jack of diamonds or the queen of diamonds as the "kicker".[1] The term, before the murder of Hickok, referred to a variety of hands. The draw was interrupted by the shooting and he never got the fifth card he was due." That´s the way it is. I was playing Untitled #23 on the way to work and on my ipod it starts off with Pangaea which I think should be the opener. And. Im a woman so Im always right

A band that has made some of the best music ever, unique songs, unique lyrics, music that has been a great inspiration in many, many ways. No other artist has been close in communicating a similar mixture of music and lyrics that, as someone said in another post, "takes me places where no other music goes". All in all a truly talented bunch of people! All the more sorry I am to say that I heartily agree with Boriah`s comments. Been wondering if I should even bother to comment, but the fact that there are such strong opinions voiced against the album made me want to join the chorus (well, maybe that`s a too strong word!). Anyway, this album is a huge disappointment! There have been ups and downs through the years, but this one certainly takes the cake when it comes to downs!! Yes, the impression is of a band presenting "half-cooked" songs, sketches of songs that deserved to be worked more upon or simply discarded! No wonder this band never reaches beyond their congregation. As Frank Zappa once said, these songs lack "commercial appeal". And no! There is nothing wrong with commercial appeal! Listen to Starfish, Heyday, Priest = Aura and lots of other songs on their later albums, that`s commercial in a positive sense!! In fact, two of my favourite Church songs ever came from "Parallell Universe" - "Espionage" and "Reward" - sublime, sophisticated music. In my ears there is one very good song on the new album, namely "Anchorage". The Church at its rocking best! The rest of the songs? Well, I`ve played them over and over again, at home, in the car, on my iPod, but sorry folks, they leave me cold. Okey, "Happenstance" and "Pangaea" have something going for them, but not enough.....The songs sound oddly uninspiring and uninspired. Maybe the Church and I have drifted apart after 26 years? Gone our different ways? Really hope not but one more album like this and that`s it, I`m out of here (and most of you will probably yell:"Good riddance"!! ) Fair enough! That`s what excommunication feels like I guess!

Posts: 775 (08/16/2009 11:20) Faith Healer Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I have now listened to this album maybe 30+ times, and every listen has simply increased my enjoyment and wonderment at just how amazing it is. It sounds amazing on my iPod at the gym and at home on my system. Wow, it's a work of genius. Uninvited Like the Clouds was scrappy in parts and wonderful in others, but this is simply the sound of a band fully in touch with their muse. Brian

This has happened with all previous albums, and most people posting here never just slaughtered the album but tried to explain their POV. HOB = sounding tired and murky, AENT = sounding too mellow and tired, FY = sounding too compressed and lousily recorded, ULTC = sounding like a bit of a mess ... ... i bet this has been this way since OSAH. E.g. i, a dyed in the wool U23 lover, always thinks "what if Powles could sound on CD like he sounds live...and yes, why not bring in Simon Polinski one more time...". However, I consider U23's song material so strong, all minor or major flaws are fucking outshined by its sheer beauty. ...because strange is what we need The Fandorin Foto Files

I started listening to the Church when Heyday came out. I heard a guy listening to Columbus in a car next to mine and just loved it. But Starfish was really what sucked me in. And then GAF sealed the deal. I still have a very special place in my heart for GAF, in spite of what what most fans now say about the album. Does the fact that the band doesn't care for this album somehow reflect badly on my appreciation of it? What about SA and MATS, both of which have songs I love? What if I admit to really really loving Forget Yourself, even if it sounds poorly produced? What if I say that I can't stand Uninvited, in some part because of the cover art? The Church is really a unique entity in the rock world. They've been amazing pretty consistently since about, uh, 1980. Can that be said about any other group of musicians? Fans come and go, have their likes and dislikes... I don't see how anyone can complain for a second about anything on U23.... but I respect your right to contradict me here. But I totally love Espionage and I never heard anyone but Zerohero say that they loved it before too. Music's such a personal thing, no way is there any pattern to what people like. But obviously we were all touched by something in this catalog. It's a big Church, lots of pews. (sorry)

Agreed with Zerohero and Boriah, Untitled23 is a drag. My fidanzata, who bought it, says it´s too gay and she only liked one song. We have most of their albums, this last one is the worst. arrivedeci!
