I know that they are not that hot currently as there has been no new stuff recently. I just wanted to say that Meet The Eels is a fun and excellent
compilation with a DVD of all their videos for someone like me who for some reason has missed most of their stuff. This has been my soundtrack recently. I just
hope that they, or E, starts to work on stuff that will some day end up on Vol 2.

i bought Beautiful Freak when it came out, and i was so pleased to learn about the strange ways american pop music could go without being nerdy-goofy. i
consider their debut a masterpiece, and the closing track "lucky day in hell" is one of my favourite songs. god, they were cool. i even tried to
adopt everett's style when i was young
 - electro shock blues was great, too, intensely bleak. what a band. then something happened i never really
understood. i stopped listening and buying their records. no idea why. everything i heard was good. i cant even tell why i lost interest. next album i got was
the big double album...i feel almost guilty why i dont remember the title - it was good, of course. too much, but very good. i even got "eels with
strings", which was another fantastic affair. somehow i feel i cheated on this band at one stage of my life. must get the best of...maybe it works as a
family therapist.

I think it´s easy to tell why you lost interest from the videos on DVD. It´s a fast forward replay from everything they, he, did and to me it shows that the
band hitted all the right marks in their first 3 albums. Then E probably felt trapped in his dreampop/folk/singer-songwriter/ ways of doing stuff. Then he had
to experiment for few albums in every imaginable way doing funk, Beck, Prince and rock-rock Oasis. He even looked and sounded like shabby bearded Jim
Morrison/Liam Gallagher personality. With the latest double album Blinking Lights and Revelations he came back almost to the stuff he was good at. Only trouble
is that it was way too long and should have been just one album. If what he does next is a 10-song tight album with some witty stuff then people will hail it
as a return to form. If he has something in him after the usual recap of bestof/strings/rarities- bonanza. Every album has to be different than the last one.
Somehow he is predictable yet he is not.

Hmm, I said something about Eels half a year ago that seems a bit uninformed now. Anyways, today I´m checking Electro-Shock Blues and Shootenanny.
Electro-Shock is an odd album because it´s frontloaded with 3 really depressing songs and the 4th, My descent Into Madness, isn´t exactly funny either. Then
there is a slow progress back to life and even some uplifting pop songs on the way. Second last song is The Medication is Wearing off. Last song P.S. You Rock
My World is good too. This is a classic!

ok Chrome, this morning I got an email from Borders saying that they had thousands of cd's marked half price. I went and shopped and came across the cd/dvd
that you mentioned above, "Meet The Eels-Essential Eels" for $8. Haven't heard too much by him/them besides Novacaine For The Soul and a few
other tracks. Looking forward to listening and possibly opening the door on another great band (one man?). FWIW, also picked up copies of the "Who Sell
Out", Iron and Wine's "Our Endless Numbered Days" and "Woman King" EP, Doves "Kingdom of Rust" (not half price!) and
Mercury Rev's "All Is Dream".

I think it´s quite an offer at $8. Just the DVD with the videos is worth something. It gives a different kind of view to the band as I think that most of the
albums are meant to be heard as whole. They make more sense that way. The compilation is a good way to see if it´s something for you. In the end it might be
seen as too much navel-gazing as he writes quite a lot about his real-life problems.
Who Sell Out - Heard this only few times but the "commercials" were a bit unfunny at the second listen if I remember correctly. I wonder what it feels like to bathe in beans? Iron & Wine - Comes up often. I might have to check them (him) out some day. Kingdom of Rust - Heard many good things about it! I think I wait for a slightly cheaper price. All Is Dream - This is a good one once you get past the singing, or if you have already? Not their easiest moment but perhaps my favourite from them. |

Eels will soon release their new album Hombre Lobo. It´s some kind of continuation for Souljacker-album. Unfortunately that was the direction I liked the least. Of course I wasn´t expecting a xylophone-driven dream pop tingel tangel with fairy dust again. It had to be something else. New single Fresh Blood wasn´t that inspiring. |

There is many good or even brilliant songs on Blinking Lights and Other Revelations. I didn´t... is excellent but I can think of 10 more that
are up there with that song too.Songwriting at the highest level, I have no doubts about it. 33 songs is a bit too much, but listened one disc at a time it´s
heavenly.
Electro-Shock Blues is also one crazy rollercoaster ride. It took some time but it was worth it.

I just saw an episode of Nova on PBS that featured Mark Everett and the music of the eels.Evidently his father was a brilliant physicist who was ahead of his time and postulated the hypothesis of Parallel Universes(not to mention providing the Church with a CD title).In the show,E visits his fathers former colleagues and places where his father studied and /or worked while developing his ideas,and these people explain it for him.If you get a chance to see this,it's a pretty interesting story........John |

Mr E and his eels are brilliant. The soundtrack to that recent movie (cant recall the title just now) with Jim Carrey & zoey Deschanel has a soundtrack
with almost exclusively Eels music...

New album Hombre Lobo wasn´t that big departure from previous ones that I imgained. The same tinkly winkly songs were there but the swamp blues numbers in
between had just been buffed up slightly more with more howling. Good stuff indeed. Next ones for me will be Useless Trinkets and Daisies of Galaxy.

Eels will release new album in January 18 2010, less than a year after Hombre Lobo. More acoustic approach is promised this time around. The twinkly music of Eels fits very well to xmas-time. Time to revisit Blinking Lights and other Revelations, which is probably the one for me from the Eels.

 End Times has been one of my revelations of the year. Second Eels album of the year seems to be even better so far. Tomorrow Morning will be officially released tomorow morning.
