Previewed their latest album and ended up buying a bunch of the songs. The band seems to be all about the song and not showcasing any player in particular. Although the singer/songwriter has the obvious spotlight cast upon him, I think for the most part the entire ensemble works towards a common musical goal. (o.k. enough cliches) Check them out. I think the singer's voice and style is unique enough to warrant a listen. In particular 'Fake Empire' and 'Apartment Story' are standout tracks. Anyone with an opinion on The National? Matt

"Alligator" is a surprisingly sinister, dry, thoughful album full of gritty pop songs (i can see why you like it Matt!), while "Boxer" may be their first masterpiece! I just checked this listens-thingy from last.fm, and it seems they are quite big already. I like the singer's voice. To me he doesn't have to have a lot of shades to it as long as the shades he does have are ones I like. KIABGOA
