Have you read his History of XX Century? It's very good! As for me, I am currently reading a detective novel by an Argentine young writer. The novel is called Filosofía y Letras and the author is Pablo de Santis. This novel means a lot to me because its action takes place precisely in one of the main buildings of my faculty, so I cannot do less than surprise myself (and cry and smile at the same time) at every exact description of those walls full of damp. Sorry I couldn't find a proper image of the front cover, but all of them were too small. In a world with so many answers left why do I need so many explanations? As for your question, I haven't read any of Perez Reverte's works and I don't even know the other writer, so I can't really tell you. Maybe you should look for some critics online for the Santi's novel... It's a really good novel. I'm getting to the final chapter soon, so exciting! By the way, I've been thinking about reading some Jules Verne stuff too because I've never read anything Also, when I have some time I will definitely read Washington Square by Henry James as last week I've watched the movie with Olivia de Havilland and Ralph Richardson and I fell in love. It has over 20,000 books online (including all of Jules Verne books) and in many languages too. I got to get a decent sized and priced reader for those texts and then I can dump "real" books. If it can play MP3´s would be a nice bonus. Real books take too much space and weight too much when moving.

And OF COURSE I am familiar with Proyect Gutenberg! It's a wonderful place to find books and I've downloaded lots of books about Elizabethan English literature from there. Problem is now I dont want to just print one book to a pile of A4. Got to get some other way. Until I figure that out I´ll read this one. Viktor Pelevin: The Helmet of Horror. It was cheap and had hip graphics...I guess there had to be one book like this. The whole book was written like chat conversation. Plot is something odd about Minotauros, labyrinths, and chatters trapped in cells with access to only one chatroom. Chat mystery novel, first one of it´s kind for me.

It's quite long and the print is TINY, though. I haven't read much since drowning in scientific journal articles in graduate school many years ago, and am trying to get back into it. I saw a preview of the film at the cinema yesterday and had tears in my eyes already, so I expect that it will be a pretty sad read. Today, I picked up a copy of 'The Memory Keeper's Daughter' by Kim Edwards, which I'm looking forward to reading too.

Columbus Posts: 977 (01/11/2008 17:43) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Still reading David Crystal's The Stories of English (which cover I posted in last year's thread), great book, but quite long, and since I wanted a more "escapist" material during the holidays I alternated reading that with... Frank Herbert Heretics of Dune Finished reading it already, it's a very absorbing, intricate, enjoyable, read, like all the six books of the original Dune series. That's book five, so I am now reading book six: Chapterhouse Dune The sixth and final chapter written by Frank Herbert. Why start again on book five? Because that starts a new "chapter" thousands of years after the death of the God Emperor of Dune, Leto II... and book six ends with a cliffhanger... which is finally resolved by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson continuing from the notes that Frank Herbert left for "Dune 7"... in two parts, the first of which (Sandworms of Dune) is next on my reading list. It was a birthday gift from a friend, and I have to admit I wasn't enthusiastic about starting it. But I got hooked after just a few pages. Chabon writes very well, and you can't help getting caught up in the story. The parts devoted to the character Joe Kavalier, who escapes from Prague in the late 1930s but loses the rest of his family, are very powerful. Last Edited By: ynnpar 01/13/2008 02:41. I´m not sure about all his themes. Quote: "His work is characterized by complex language, frequent use of metaphor, and an extensive vocabulary,[3] along with numerous recurring themes, including nostalgia,[3] divorce, abandonment, fatherhood, and issues of Jewish identity.[4] He often includes gay, bisexual, and Jewish characters in his work." Anyway, I´ll put his name in my memory and maybe when the time is right... Intriguing cover btw. It gives the feeling that it´s not taking itself too seriously, which is okay with me.

You may find a few overly big words every 100 pages or so, but other than that it's very straightforward stuff. Like I said, I was not at all interested in the book when I received it. But I was very pleasantly surprised. Give it a try. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

The thought of dragging it with me in the bus (where I read the most on my way to work) for 2-3 weeks was too much. I think about it for a while. Instead I took this one for next: Jose Saramago: The Cave Huh, that took a while. Quite slow story about an old man, pottery and a big shopping mall.
