Many of the great distilleries are within an hour from my house. Truth is, excepting some foolish youthful imbibing, I'm not a bourbon drinker at all. Scotch whisky fascinates me as does some Irish whiskey, but I'm discovering that I'll never be a true connoisseur. Walking through a liquor store yesterday I stopped to admire the bottles of Woodford Reserve, Knob Creek, and Buffalo Trace. So much darker than Irish whiskey... I know that our beloved Tony Trout is a dyed-in-the-wool single malt devotee (and I've sought his advice before). This is what I've tried thus far: Irish whiskey: Jameson Bushmills Black Bush (Bushmills aged in sherry casks, I believe) Brennan's (named after my son -I had to buy it) Kilbegan (cheap crap) Scotch whisky: Auchentoshan (lowland single malt scotch, very light) Speyburn (single malt, dark and delicious) Johnny Walker Black (rich) J&B (crap) Bourbon whiskey: Woodford Reserve (complex, caramel, charcoal, yum) Jim Beam Wild Turkey (good flavor despite the price) Maker's Mark Seems I will never be able to enjoy sipping 2 or 3 ounces of the stuff with a half teaspoon of spring water (like a true believer would). No, I like to pour my Bushmills into a big cup of Baileys or make Irish Coffee with it. I like my Jameson mixed with Carolans Irish Creme (so good -could have that at breakfast). Brennans went down well when watered-down considerably. But last night I think I had a breakthrough with Scotch (Speyburn). I found just the right amount of water to let me drink it without a tremendous burn and still taste the complex flavors. Laphroaig is the one I want to conquer. Canadian whiskey? Drambuie? Anyone want to chime in on the subject? across the endless sky we are deployed

Posts: 1837 (04/07/2007 11:45) 1st Woman on the Moon Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	There's always a bottle of Knob Creek at our house, more for my husband than myself. I prefer wine. We had a bourbon-theme party once (before children) with bourbon marinaded meats and ending with a bourbon soaked pound cake. The whole house spun. It is legendary but cannot be repeated.

I have the incredible luck having a good friend who runs a pub with a broad selection of whisky, mostly single malts. I think i have tried most of his 60 or so whiskies. Here are those I call my favourites. 1. Glenfarclas 105 2. Highland Park 18y 3. Laphroaig 12 4. Lagavulin 18 plus almost everything produced on Islay. ...because strange is what we need Fandorinfotos

Perfect on chill nights. Ann! I want to come to the next bourbon fest. Oddly enough, I had an experience TODAY with someone which involved Knob Creek (indirectly - none of it was consumed). Craziness. And where is Florian Trout? He and Brian toured some of the distilleries when he was in bonny Scotchland. across the endless sky we are deployed

Space Saviour Posts: 1595 (04/10/2007 08:46) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	There seems to be about 10 or 20 that are always on everyone's list: Macallan Laphroaig Ardbeg Springbank Lagavulin Highland Park Glenmorangie Glenfarclas Balvenie Talisker Some of my personal favorites that are either less known or not as highly claimed: Cragganmore: probably one of the most tightly balanced SMW Dalmore: Always consistantly good, overall my favorite every day kind of "blue collar" SMW. (not terribly expensive!) Aberlour: In my opinion you are splitting hairs between this SMW and Macallan. Caol Ila: First drank this with Brian and Bill in Scotland. One of my very favorite SMW's. Probably more unique then any other. Tomintoul: A very flavorful SMW, you have to be in the mood for this Speyside whisky. Great in the summer time!

Sadly this excellent Speyside is not available in the U.S. you can find some independent bottles if you look hard. This is one of the richest tasting malts on earth! pour it on your ice cream, it's that good!

Slightly smoky with seaside tones in it. I also recall the price on this SMW going up considerably compared to other malts. This typically bottled at 14 years, which seems to be just about right. Lost In Translation peaked my interest in SUNTORY It also peaked my interest in Scarlett Johansson LOL Yamazaki which is about the only available Japanese SMW in the U.S. is available in a 12 and 18 year old variety.

I must admit I have started to enjoy various malts, but am unsure which ones, as I usually just ask for Malt of the Month at the Fisherman's Bar in Broughty Ferry. Hey, Tony, fancy a drink soon?
