Wow, a film that actually makes you think! Amazing filmwork and performances. Michael Caine was even brilliant!!! Anyone watched this at all? What impression did it give? I don't really want to give away too much in case anyone was thinking of sseeing it. Do see it. Quite a few cultural references too. Very confrontational. But I agree about Caine, and Owen is to me one of the most brilliant ruffian actors of his generation, for the bit of fragility and vulnerability he adds to the role. The first half was pure Gilliam if someone would have written a reasonable script and doped him with enough valium to slow his hectic directing down a little. Alfonso Cuarn is one of the best directors around (which makes him one of the best Mexican directors, he's way above the overrated Alejandro Gonzlez-Iarritu). If you watch the DVD do watch the extras, knowing how they filmed some scenes does add to the magic. Has anyone read the book it's based on? Everybody has opinions: I have them, you have them. And we are all told from the moment we open our eyes, that everyone is entitled to his or her opinion. Well, thats horsepuckey, of course. Here's what I wrote: *Children of Men* 1/13/2007, Saturday How anyone could ever say that this movie was "Blade Runner for the 21st century" blows my mind. I wanted to see it because I like Clive Owen. He was the biggest surprise in Closer. I liked him in The Inside Man. I even enjoyed him in Deception. But this movie did nothing for me or for him. Probably the most interesting point about this movie was that it didn't take place in the far distant feature. it was only two decades away. Often we think of the end of the world scenarios, or the world without hope, to be so far removed from the present that we can't see how we'd get there. Definitely not the case here. There was an interesting scene where the baby cries and the soldiers put down their guns. Last night I heard John Edwards speak to the Commonwealth Club in San Jose, California. He said something like, "Americans need to be patriotic not just about wars." He's running from president for the 2008 democratic ticket. Not sure how this fits, but it does. No steady stream of Disney Pre-Teen crap that the house has been bombarded with. Anyway, my wife and I sat down and watched this film. I enjoyed it. My wife was amazed how dark and depressing it was. I loved Blade Runner when it came out in the early 80's. It is still one of my favorite movies. I didn't see that connection, other then they are both near distant future Sci-Fi movies. I tend to like those sort of Sci-Fi movies the best. Gatica, Blade Runner, even that silly movie that J-Lo was in a few years back. ? help me I don't remember the name of it. While I liked the Matrix movies, I wasn't engaged in them as much. Children of Men for me was engaging. I liked the fact that it wasn't an over the top Hollywood movie and it was set in London. cheers, Tony

You want another excellent near future Science Fiction (which is not the same as Sci-Fi!!) movie? The Final Cut It stars Robin Williams. Great movie, showing what good SF is usually about: the effect and aftermath of technological advances on human society. The fictional scientific advance is direct recording of people's memories (to be retrieved after their deaths and shown in memorial movies, which relates to one of the meanings of the title). Want a blatant example of the difference between SF and sci-fi? Think Blade Runner vs. Matrix Of course you can't get more SF than Tarkovski's Solaris (see the Clooney/Soddenberg version for sci-fi). Regarding the background details in Children of Men: the one mentioned is only one of many. I've heard the movie is not sprinkled, but soaked in them (people recommend re-watching), I don't think I catched but a few. I don't think it was that dark, actually, I believe we followed a dark, moody protagonist, but that the movie offers some hope (at the end, at least). And then there is the fact that Solaris is a lot more known... But, yes, Stalker is another great SF movie by Tarkovski. If "strange is what we need" Stalker and Solaris are indispensable. BTW, the original Solaris, the book by Stanislaw Lem and the movie are not exactly the same story. I've heard that Lem was unsatisfied with Tarkovski's adaptation. I like both, actually. The only good thing about the third Solaris, the Hollywood adaptation of Tarkovski's movie, is the visual effects. Have you read the Strugatski brothers short story on which Tarkovski based Stalker? ("Picnic on the Roadside" is the usual English translation of the title IIRC). I have read some Strugatski brothers SF (translated to the Spanish), they are good. Another recommendation for an SF movie in near-future times: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (And don't doubt for a second that it is SF. It is SF so smart that it avoided being billed as such, much as what Ray Bradbury achieved, and just the same it is a perfect example of what good SF is.)
