Toss every expectation out the window -- absolutely gorgeous. Easily will be near the top of my list this year. "Those who walk without sin are so hungry..."

Glow Worm Posts: 887 (09/11/2002 05:27) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Currently, the 'recent' album I've been playing the most is Do Make Say Think's "& Yet & Yet", released earlier this year but only just snaffled by me. It's beautiful, meandering 'post-rock' noodlings reminiscent of Tortoise. Quite lovely. Hey, Heather: what's the Doug Martsch album like? I LOVE Built To Spill. 'Perfect From Now On' and 'Keep It Like A Secret' are two of my all-time faves. Any comparison to those two? GB.

Posts: 494 (09/11/2002 10:33) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	GB: the Doug Martsch is not entirely different from a BTS record, but it's definitely more introspective in a way...like you'd expect from a solo effort, I guess. Lots of slide guitar, which I love in a quieter, acoustic-y context. Actually, come to think of it, this record and the new Beck have a lot in common. RP: the new Soft Boys is great, if a bit more subdued in its nervous-schizophrenic-psycho-delic guitars -- it's no Underwater Moonlight by any means, but it sounds like a logical step all things considered. And Robyn Hitchcock is still writing some weird-ass lyrics, which is always good news. Worth picking up, definitely. "Those who walk without sin are so hungry..."

Great album by the long-running group; touring the US now on their 25th anniversary tour, and one of the most enjoyable shows I've seen recently. Also 24Hour PartyPeople soundtrack, cause sometimes I'm just a bit lazy getting all of my fave Factory tunes together.

I was trying to pinpoint what it was about the album that made me think it was strange, then I read an article saying they wanted to emphasize the vocals...all of those layered vocals and chorus semi-chants -- it gives the record this haunted sort of feeling. And I LOVE Sally Timms. I could listen to her sing all day -- she's supposed to do vocals on the new Jon Rauhouse record, along with Neko Case and Kelly Hogan. (He's the steel guitar player that seems to pop up on every album a Bloodshot artist does.) I wish the Mekons would come here. "Those who walk without sin are so hungry..."

White Stripes first record, with its harrowing versions of "One More Cup of Coffee" by Dylan and "Saint James Infirmary Blues" Also, I plan to pick up the new Spoon cd, Kill the Moonlight. They played about 5 songs from it in a live appearance here last week. Somewhat more intricate (live at least) than the material from Girls Can Tell.

As a matter of subjectivity, every project of his I've heard has been goddamn brilliant. The Zeni Geva album he worked on, a couple of Neurosis albums, and of course his own band Shellac.

Posts: 494 (11/11/2002 19:12) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Remove this ad I have been on a massive Cocteau Twins kick lately, so I have been listening to them lots, particularly Heaven or Las Vegas, Treasure, Four-Calendar Cafe, and Blue Bell Knoll, and some assorted b-sides, BBC outtakes, etc. Gave Simon Raymonde's solo album a try and despised it and have been listening to Violet Indiana as well. The new Tori Amos album, Scarlet's Walk, is the best album she's done in ages. Saw her last night in Atlanta and she was in fine form -- played songs I never in a million years would have expected her to pull out, particularly "Mother" off of Little Earthquakes. The entire night was gorgeous, as is her new album. "If you're a thought, you will want me to think you."
