Last week I put it in for the first time in months. I was playing the first disc. Maybe it was the weather, my mood, or some strange star alignment, but I ended up really liking what I was hearing. Does anyone else like Moby? Is it wrong to? I'm not sure why I bought it in the first place. It's very catchy. I really enjoy his cover of "Temptation". Dave Your Friendly Pharoah

Follow your bliss, as Joseph Campbell used to say. What I like about Moby is that he basically does what he likes, without concern for public opinion.

Cause his last two albums have been in the same lines of Play , hence one can't help thinking that his record company want him to stick with the same winning formula which granted them millions of copies of that album. Both albums have been rather poor compared to Play , which was an outstanding album.

He came to my attention when I saw The Bourne Identity, where a song from his album "18" was played during the final credits. I immediately bought that album and I really like it. "Play" is collecting dust though. Still have to dig some more albums. I think though he's huge and famous there's still something in the music that makes it feel kind of "independent". Hmm. Whatever that means now....

I really got into his music in late 2001 through 2002, when I was in my techno/electronica/rave phase. I only have Ambient, Everything Is Wrong, I like To Score, Mobysongs, Play, and 18. I don't yet have Hotel, but I haven't really been in to mood for that kind of music lately. I did think that Play and 18 were very similar stylistically. But most of the electronica I like now is either the more ambient/tribal ambient of Steve Roach, Robert Rich, or the ambient/world/trip hop of bands like Delerium, Enigma, Conjure One, and recently, Achillea. Maybe I'll get Hotel eventually, and then I'll let you know my feelings on it. "Fly, the sky is your friend And its holding you up again and again, High over the night Where I labour and write this song once over again..."

I don't know enough about the two subsequent records to say if he's following a formula. I based my observation on an interview I saw after the release of 18, which left me with the impression that he was virtually independent. He's on Richard Branson's V2 Label, home of the White Stripes and other fairly idiosyncratic and indepedent artists. Nevertheless, I defer to you.

This kind of late 90´s bestseller stuff is the usual kind of fodder there. The album is too long and it has too many songs (17) but there is some gems. Somehow I felt that the second half of the album was really dragging and all the good ideas were introduced in the first half. "Natural Blues", Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad" and "Porcelain" are the 3 obvious tracks I have liked so far. I remember seeing lot of TV-spots for the movie "The Beach" and wondering what is that song. Now I know that it was Porcelain. I somehow was imagining it could be Massive Attack or something. Same kind of vibes. It is odd how there is no lyrics in the leaflet, only serious essays of veganism, holocaust and politics. It is quite a personal idea to do so, only trouble is that his essays are really bland and uninteresting. There is no need to stereotype him because he seems like a stereotype of political correctness and there is not a single idea that could be called brand new. Strange combination. He drums impatient fingers on the chrome and on the leather
