Elvis Presley

Elvis is dead, his songs fall dead on my ears. It's only when I hear them as covers with updated sounds that I can appreciate them. None of Elvis's songs aged gracefully, much like Elvis himself.


The Beatles

Half are dead, and half their songs are DOA in my ears too. Those songs show their age, and though they have a few masterpieces they were the original Boy Band, and for their first albums they sounded like it too (really, if N'Sync existed in the 60s they would have sung pop songs much like the Beatles's).


Both might be icons, but for me both are overrated.

The Beatles were marketed as a teenybopper band. Undeniable, sorry.
And there are hours of footage of screaming teenage girls to prove it.
If you don't believe my claim that the American music marketing machine product named N'Sync (had that abomination existed) would have aped the Beatles then just look at The Monkees.(*)



I rest my case.

The ring finger of Mr. Starkey had more talent than the whole N'Sync, and The Beatles did transcend their teenybopper band origins, but that was obvious enough to be left unsaid and it's besides the point.

Now, mind you, that I'm only talking about the music of The Beatles as a band, not of individual Beatles as solo artists. I love many Lennon and McCartney solo songs, I love, love them do...

I never said I don't recognize the contributions, I do, that was not the point.

The point, the topic, was artists you don't understand.

I don't "get it" about The Beatles. I don't have their albums, I don't ever get the urge to play their songs. I just don't understand what is so appealing about them to most people. In the word's that start this thread I "can't fathom what it is that people [still] see in them".

Same for Elvis.

I find it great that others have built a musical edifice upon the foundations those left, but I'd rather stay above ground, if you get my meaning.

Might as well tell you that I don't understand what's so great about The Rolling Stones. That's another case of leaving foundations and me unwilling to dig down to them.

I'm not being an iconoclast for iconoclasticness sake, I simply don't "get it" about them, they're not icons in my pantheon, and I'm not ashamed to say it.



(*) P.S: (pre-emptive strike) before you complain about what I said of The Monkees: they might have transcended their marketing-created status, but they did start as "product", as a copy of The Beatles, and that's all I'm saying.
