Literally the last song that made me cry was "Music of the Night" from Phantom of the Opera, what a fucking great movie! That timeless love stuff gets me...
Ralph Vaughan Williams "Serenade to Music" always hits me too, it is sooooo georgeous. The Moody Blues "Your Wildest Dreams" video (minus the very ill-advised 80s dance choreography in the middle) has gotten to me before. I can relate to the representation of youthful idealism in a band and your first love. Gene's "speak to me someone" and some of their other tunes are very emotional for me. Huh, I know there are many more...I'll let you know when they hit me. Tony |

Well, as I eluded to in another post, anything from Paris Hilton brings a tear to my eye.
Seriously though, good topic. I would have to say that "Bringin' Me Home" from Mojave 3 is just a stellar song... Coupled with the life moving experiences that occured when I got that album, just makes for that nostalgic tear that still appears from time to time... Now days though, it is a good tear. |

I'm going to leave out anything by The Church and its many satellite relations. While this is not complete, and probably very unique to me, here is a list that surely is to change over time. These songs both make me happy and sad with alternating joy and sorrow. It's mostly like bathing in memories when listening them.
Willie Nelson's "Hello Love, Goodbye" Kris Kristofferson's "When I Loved Her" John Lennon's "How?" Depeche Mode "Somebody" Jim Croce "Operator" Madrugada "This Old House" Mazzy Star "Blue Light" Nick Drake "Black Eyed Dog" Paul McCartney "Here Today" Sinead O'Connor "Nothing Compares 2 U" REM "Night Swimming" Simon & Garfunkel "7 O'Clock News/Silent Night" James Blunt "Goodbye My Lover" Roy Orbison "In Dreams" Dire Straights "Why Worry" David Gray "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye" Many things by Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, Pink Floyd, and many more. I think the last thing that really choked me up was "Cole's Corner", title track to the last Richard Hawley album. Played it over and over, nothing else would do. Fantastic song...fantastic album, for that matter.

The Church: After Everything Now This
I can't listen to this song without thinking of early 2002. This song almost describes exactly what I was going through that March, when my grandfather died. My grandparents were literally second parents to me, and I took their deaths very hard (my grandmother had died a year prior, in April 2001). "I really thought it would go on forever, never believed they would sever the ties, all of the questions remain unanswered..." just about says it all. Then "Here is a child playing in a garden Here is an old man with a broken heart Here comes a train to take you away It all goes round and round and comes back to the start I was never really sure what I was waiting for When the moment came I was looking away Obsessed with a past, scared of the future Never took the time to be here today" The child playing in the garden might as well represent me, the old man with the broken heart, my grandfather - his heart had been broken ever since grandma died. And the train, death, took him away to finally be with her. But at that time, I was distracted with other things, and definitely didn't take the time to "be here today". "When the moment came, I just couldn't choose" - I had the opportunity to take my grandparents' house, but I was so distracted with other things, I didn't want to be bothered with a decision of that magnitude, and passed it off. A decision I've regretted ever since. I would have loved to own that house, it was a home away from home for me, and perfect for me. U2: I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For (live "Rattle and Hum" version) One cold day in 1988, I was on the bus ready to go home from school, and the tape "Rattle and Hum" in my walkman. This was also the day of a funeral for a girl who died in a plane crash, who had gone to school with my brother. There were cars and cars coming of people to attend the funeral, so much so that the bus really couldn't get very far very soon. This song was playing, and it's a very gospelly version of the song. It just seemed so perfect, a very poignant moment in life. I could feel a lump in my throat and chills, this song playing as people drove from all over to attend this funeral. Now whenever I hear this song, my eyes water. I know there are a lot of you who don't like U2, but this song caught that poignant moment just perfectly. "Well I got a fever, and I'm feeling fainter, I'm a dim receiver, I'm a Cold War painter, If you can just hold still, I will make you all so beautiful"

It's nice to see all of these responses upon returning home tonight from yet another venture around this vast continent called North Americana and feeling much smarter and wiser from it....cruising along at FL340 (in "pilot" terms is 34,000 ft above sea level) I put on "All of a Sudden (It's Too Late) by XTC...
Lyrics such as these really touch my heart... "Love's not a product you can hoard or pack a suitcase with it's more a way you have to give." Is that beutiful or what!!! |
