I really love this band now and have been consuming everything I can find by them. I vaguely remember The Fire Dances E.P. from the early eighties but I think the band never really caught on in the states. The highlights are: Killing Joke(1980) Pandemonium(1994) Democracy(1997) Killing Joke(2003) Tribal rhythms with heavy guitars and apocalyptic themes. A heavy metal band with brains if there is such a thing. drumwise

It's dark, it's evil and merges the insanity of KJ2003 with some of the spacious sounds of their eighties work. It has that weird solemn "celebrational" character only KJ are able to create. They bring in an orchestra, monstrously long and violent songs, and nevertheless it's much much more than your usual dark metal band. The title track combines a thunderstorm with soaring melodies like Adorations. In the end, the songs get a bit overlong, but the flow is great. Senseless working overtime

Posts: 5900 (03/25/2006 09:38) Faith Healer Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	there it is sitting on my CD shelf. this album is so relentlessly aggressive i guard it like a cage of scorpions someone placed in my flat. these are no guitars anymore. this is the sound of liquid lava routed through a PA... this is no voice anymore...these are the bloody lacerated shreds of what once were vocal chords. hehe....i should do these PR kits... and it's good fun to listen to. the same fun as watching a very good horror movie. monumental low key high end industrial tribal metal attacks. but what tribe.... i'm sure i don't want to meet the folks behind this kind of folklore... The Wolverhampton musician's body was found on Saturday in Geneva, Switzerland, where he was recording. Killing Joke had hits including Love Like Blood and Pandemonium, and were covered by Metallica and Foo Fighters. Bandmates Jaz Coleman and Geordie Walker described Raven as "possibly the funniest man on planet Earth and a brother to us all". Raven's music career included stints in Neon Hearts and glam rock band Kitsch before he replaced original Killing Joke bassist Youth in 1982. He left the band in 1987 before forming Murder Inc and joining Ministry, Prong and Mob Research. Prong bandmate Ted Parsons found Raven in a chair and called an ambulance crew, which was unable to revive him. "I'm devastated," Parsons said. "He will be missed by many."

He almost carries Fire Dances, Night Time and Extremities. He definitely does at times. The 2003 album and Hosannas were okay I thought, but they had become too over the top, balls out metal for my tastes. By the way the picture above is of Youth, their other basist, not Raven.

Glow Worm Posts: 284 (10/23/2007 09:15) Glow Worm Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	i will have to give hosannas and 2003 another listen. it has been a while since i have heard them. i thought that pandemonium and democracy were great. i am actually listening to brighter than a thousand suns right now, and although it is their most dated album (or outside the gate, if it counts), but it has some great songs.

It's metal without everything I loathe in metal. Just listen to the opener, The Death And Resurrection Show, and admire the drums and the drive, plus the summoning vocals... and there is Asteroid, an evil speed industrial miniature... and a grandiose pop song, "Seeing Red". And a "ballad", hehe, You Never Get To Me. A lovely album. Kudos to Dave Grohl's killer drums, btw! Hosannas is a different beast. Some of it is really tiring, too long, too low-fi. It really sounds like it was recorded in Chernobyl. But the title track, Hosannas From The Basement Of Hell - you have to love it!! It has something icy, 80es like in it, but the pulse is 2010. When the infernal verse arrives in chorus land, I'm in awe. And if I should ever copy a rock star's style, Jaz Coleman would be the choice RIP Raven, long live Jaz Coleman!! And long live Geordie, the man with the semihollow body guitar. ...because strange is what we need Fandorinfotos

After that it starts to get a little bit boring. I think that it is because there is little variation in the songwriting style. Up next will be the 2003 album.

Posts: 5900 (02/21/2010 15:06) Faith Healer Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	album's gonna be called "Killing Joke 13 - Feast Of Fools", out on a Finnish metal label (!), Spinefarm.... Here's a great article - "The new songs they play us suggest a return to KJ mark1 with equally strong personalities pulling in different directions and plenty of the songs have echoes of tracks such as 'Pssyche', 'Requiem' or 'The Fall Of Because' but really have a much more modern feel. On 'European Superstate' (an admittedly guitar free mix) there is a very tough DFA disco punk feel with hard house/EBM overtones almost as if it were John Foxx and LCD Soundsystem working on 'Open Up' instead of Lydon and Leftfield. Elsewhere 'This World Hell' calls to mind KJ followers Godflesh or perhaps even Justin Broadrick's most recent project the free industrial grind jazz of Greymachine or the post metal of Neurosis, with straight up metal breakdowns galore. There is also a freer element to Geordie's oppressive grind and dampened chord clangour on 'Depth Charge'. It's hard not speculate that the precision propulsion tribalsim of Paul Ferguson and bass space carved out by Youth have spurred the band on to greater heights. Best of the bunch however is 'Absolute Dissent'. Youth, who is actually hearing the mixed down version for the first time as we do, whistles afterwards saying "That has made my Christmas hearing Jaz's vocals on that." ...because strange is what we need The Fandorin Foto Files
