The less heralded Genius of Peter Koppes |

I'm finding more and more in awe of his contributions especially "Appalatia" from FY and "Never Before" on ULTC. In this regard, he reminds me of George Harrison. Please sound off on this guy, what other songs has been the primary force behind, etc..

PK sings these songs and I presume he wrote them as well:
As you will (Heyday b-side) A new season (Starfish & EMD) Transient (GAF) Forgotten Reign (GAF b-side) Dream (GAF b-side) Reward (Parallel Universe) Appalatia        (FY) Never Before (ULTC) There are also songs PK mostly wrote but have Steve singing lead like "Night friends" from AENT, but I dont know if this is true. Only "A new season" is credited to only PK, others are credited to the whole band. There must be more? A new season has became a favourite of many after the acoustic version in EMD. That song has been called the highlight of the album many times and that is true. |

At last night's concert in N. Myrtle Beach, Marty suffered a sudden onset migraine . . . on the very first song, Block. Somehow, they finished the song and it went fairly well.
I've had a couple of sudden onset migraines myself, and I can vouch for the fact that when they hit, it's like being hit by lightning between the eyes from the back of the eyeballs. When they hit me, the only thing which kept me from screaming was the fear that if I opened my mouth, I'd puke from the pain. Anyhow, Peter, Tim, and Steve (with the help of a female roadie (someone's daughter?) on the second song.) "Buffalo," if my memory isn't deceiving me. Peter put forth an absolutely stellar performance, switching between guitar, keyboards, and mandolin. He was incredible. And he was so cool about the whole thing. It was a terrible situation, but he didn't appear to be upset about it at all. Tim made some an adjustment to his drum kit, and for a good deal of the show, Steve played Marty's guitar . . . Tim's drumming was strong enough to considerably lesson the loss of the bass, but it was Peter who, IMO, saved the day with his versitality. Steve, of course deserves a lot of credit too for being tenacious enough to keep going. There were a few pauses between songs as they confered on what to do next, but face it, most bands would have just packed it in and said, "to hell with it." Some goofball kept calling out for "Reptile," and Tim got a bit irrate, asking the guy, something along the lines of "Now really, how can we do the song with only one guitar?" and made a few coments about someone humming the ever-repeating riff Marty usually plays. (I've learned that song and keeping the rhythm of where you are in the almost constant loop isn't nearly as easy as it seems.) After a moment, Steve, said something like, "Save the jokes for later," and went on to introduce the Frank Sinatra version of the song. And by all the gods ever invented by humans (and probably insects too), the DID do a priceless version of the song with Peter playing keyboards and Steve playing the bass. It was a good rendition of the song. It was a short short show, but it was quite impressive. I'd always appreciated Peter's talents, but the show last night really boosted it. |

Thanks for those great posts guys! I think I will have to make a mix cd of Peter's finest moments. I'm going to get Water Rites and Love Era/ Irony from his solo releases. Can anyone comment on his solo work? I've never heard any of it.

If you havent heard any PK-solostuff then you should visit his myspace-pages here:
www.myspace.com/peterkoppes Theres 4 songs to listen if you havent already received your albums. Out of those I liked "Blame" most. Easygoing and melodic stuff. Some like it a lot but quite many do not. Woohaa, this is my 100th post! |

I totally agree with the original poster. PK is fantastic, and a decent guy besides. I tended to overlook some of PK's stuff because Marty was the more energetic - so you assume he does the rockin' out stuff. Once I saw them live I realized how great PK really was. Both he and MWP fill their own sonic space in their own way, but once you see them live you realize much more about who does what.

I don't think it is possible for me to pick a favorite Church song per se. I could probably do a top 25 and they are all equally as special to me.
Appalatia and A New Season definitely would be amongst that 25. Transient and Forgotten Reign would be lurling right outside of those 25. All in all for the
small amount of songs that he has contributed, his Church contributions always seem to strike a chord with me. Inmy view, for my tastes, that's pretty
incredible. Of all the stuff that Chrome listed above, Reward is the only one that is just ho-hum as far as I'm concerned. (BTW, also a big fan of
MWP's Church songs)
PK's solo stuff that I own is very different to his Church output. Lots of synthesizers, drum machines and a sometimes off key voice are all things that have been criticised in other spots, some of which is true. It does have its own charm tho. More uneven than anything the Church has done but there are some bright spots. |

Man I need to preview my posts before I hit reply. My spelling is horrific, or is it the typing? "would be lurling right outside" should have said

oddly h2d, 'reward' is one of my favourites!
however i must agree with many of your thoughts here. peter's solo work is uneven, allthough in fairness it must be said that this is true of the entire bands side projects. he is nonetheless a sonic genius and it does come through someware on every album. the area in which he is MOST underated is as a keyboardist. his playing on the accoustic gigs showed a deftness of touch that blew me away...... after a london show i asked him where his influences lay as regards his jazz-tinged fingerwork. his reply? 'iv'e been listening to a lot of thelonious monk.' www.myspace.com/dudesofneptune |

funny, finally someone who also thinks Reward is lackluster....
i like most of PK's Church songs, with A New Season still firmly placed at the number one spot of ALL songs by ANY band in general.... i only still don't know what to think of Never Before..... |

I 've said before that I think A New Season is simply stunning. I also really enjoy Appalatia. But some of PK's other songs take the band in a
direction that I don't really care for and that for some reason I associate with Pink Floyd. This seems particularly true of Never Before, and Reward gets
on my nerves quite a lot too. But yeah, I've always admired PK and the role he plays in the band. He seems steady and solid, happy to do his thing quietly
while more eyes are on SK and MWP. Every time I've gone to see them live I've made a point to stay on PK's side of the stage. I like to study his
expressions when there's lots of activity going on on the other side of the stage. It's always nice to see him smile now and again, sometimes make
brief comments to SK...

One of my favorite live moments from the Church came during the ULTC tour in Indianapolis. (I think it was) Steve announced A New Season and got HUGE applause.
Peter stopped, stepped back and grinned like he couldn't believe we liked his song. One of my all time favorites too. I prefer the electric version though.

Never Before is great. A shame it was booted off first from ULTC-game. It seems that song divides opinions a lot.

hey *I* like Never Before a lot!!
just the survivor game proved scientifically N.B. is the worst song on ULTC. or at least the song with the worst PR agency. |

I think "Never Before" is a great song! However, I do like "Appalatia" from FY better.

Add me to the "Never Before" champions! It rocks! Oh, and I was one of the crowd who cheered PK in Indianapolis for "A New Season"! I
personally would pay to hear all of PK's church tunes instead of HAVING to hear "UTMW" because of name/tune recognition.

I like most of PK's contributions on the cds. Its odd, its like whenever him and MWP have a song on the cd its a rare treat. Transient, As You Will, and
Appalatia are probably my favourites from him. Acoustic A New Season is another great track as well...

A New Season came up on my ipod yesterday as I was arriving somewhere. I had to stop in the car and wait for it to finish, so beautiful it is.
Im loving the new song LLC about his little son. It's such a gorgeous pop tune, takes me back to a place where life was uncomplicated. I really think Peter has a lot more to offer than we ever get to hear and if you get to be on his side of the stage, pay attention because you'll be blown away by what comes out of that guitar of his! Im a Steve Kilbey fan through and through but Peter is also one of my favouritest people in the whole wide world, along with Tim, Marty and Steve... okay, im a little biased but it's always cool to see a PK mention.

At the San Francisco show this past June I was about 10 feet from Peter. I really had no idea how incredible his playing was until then, I just liked certain
songs he has written. I was completely blown away by his leads. I wish we'd get to hear more from him in interviews and that he'd be showcased a bit
more during the live shows.
