Can anyone help me out as far as what would be the best solo output of any of the members? I feel that you can really tell a great band based more upon their solo projects than their work as a collective unit. This is because you sometimes get the "Sting" factor into the equation where the lead singer, or 1 member of the band is a controlling, manipulative, tyrant, and so the creativity merely comes from 1 person, and the other band members are basically "sitting in". As an avid Replacements fan, I grew more in love with this band upon discovering each of their solo projects. Each one of their solo efforts was very refreshing and I enjoyed each one, Tommy Stinson's Bash & Pop was without a doubt a phenominal record, that got no respect at all. Maven Posts: 19 (06/11/2002 12:18) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I would imagine that by the time this thread comes to an end you will have been recommended every existing solo or non-Church album by at least one person and thus overall you may not be any the wiser. Whilst not for one minute would I want to suggest that Steve Kilbey is a "controlling, manipulative, tyrant" I would have to say that it is only the Kilbey related projects that I have consistently liked. There are individual songs from the others that may have something to offer but as a whole I do not think that the albums live up to my expectations. My favorite Kilbey albums are (at least for the moment) Unearthed, Narcosis (or Narcosis+), Dabble and Vast Halos (Hex). The only Kilbey album that I have never grown to appreciate is Remindlessness - and yet this seems to be everyone else's favorite. I now wait to be shot down in flames by all fans of Marty and Pete!

For Marty, my fave is Spirit Level although I'll not argue against HOIH. Peter's best to date is Love Era / Irony. I haven't heard Tim's Tygs in Space album. The thing I'd keep in mind, if your are new to the solo albums, is that they aren't necessarily like the Church. Steve utilizes a lot of keyboards and electronic percussion, Marty's solo songs are less surreal and deal more directly with matters of the heart, Peter's stuff is a bit weaker lyrically but features stellar musicianship. I don't have a CD burner... but maybe someone could burn you a "best of solo" CD so help you get your feet wet. There's also some solo downloads out there. Enjoy, Michael

However, I never find the solo projects to be as consistently good as The Church. Typically, I really enjoy about half the songs, and the other half not very much at all. As for favorites: Sk - The Slow Crack (rarely mentioned, but I think first six tracks are very, very good) Unearthed - Several gorgeous songs Narcosis - my least favorite Remindlessness - the best and worst of SK in one long cd (in my opinion). Totally worth purchasing just for the Celebration of Elephant God. I always loved Gloriana as well. Dabble - sorry to say, I was rather disapointed. Some great individual tracks, but fairly weak overall. Acoustic and Intimate - I absolutely love this release. I got it just out of loyalty/habit of supporting Church related efforts, I was not expecting much, but incredibly enjoyable cd. I highly recommend it. Hex - I love about half of each one Jack Frost - The same, I really love about half of each one. But both are definitely worth exploring PK - Only have From the Well. Missing all the others. Would really like to hear them. From the Well sketchy effort, not frequently played. MWP - Art Attack, Rhyme, Spirit Level all nice to listen to (but again, several weak moments). Was not satisfied with HOIH - only about 2-3 tracks I really enjoyed. Tim - Never heard his stuff, or even any opinions about it. Anyone? Refomation - includes one of my all time fave Church related tracks (The Moon and the Sea). Other wise, fairly average release, and not nearly as enjoyable overall as AENT - for example. So, there is my two cents worth. I imagine no one agrees with this completely, but then again, I begin to learn that Church fans rarely agree on these things (no strong consensus), but it makes it all more interesting. Would be very boring if we all agreed.

The work out which member you would like to follow up first. Another way of choosing, is just going into a record shop and seeing what is available. I would guess that availability of some of these releases would severly limit your choice. Either way, you will begin somewhere, it doesn't matter where, and you can work your way through them all. My two cents: I recently bought Pharmakoi/DCHWEU but found that a long title doesn't make up for the absence of MWP. Prior to that, the only other related album I had was MWP's Art Attack which has a couple of good tracks only on it. I thought with 3/4 of The Church on board it would go close to the real thing but it is like 'Churchlite' - no calories, cholesterol free, no added sugar. Only one good song - All See It Now. Just goes to show - it's the sum of the parts that make whole - it's a team game for The Church. Puts the great albums into perspective really - AENT, Starfish, P=A. On the positive note, I also bought HOB (and Hindsight 'which is absolute gold) at the same time and, despite only having played it a few times, it's really starting to grow on me. Good hunting - try www.whammo.com.au for all The Church and related stuff - ultra reliable and ultra safe - very good service provider. It's cheaper for me to get it sent from them in Aus to me in NZ than it is for me to get my local record shop to order it in. Haere ra Swerve

From beginning to end though, I'd don't think anything release stands up the way the two 'Jack Frost' CDs do. I'm partial to the first, but both are extremely entertaining and especially diverse. Fraulein. Bliss comes first as a jangling flood ...

Pharma gets the most play by far. AENT is enjoyable but kinda spotty. Dabble has been a disappointment so far. Though I refuse to give up on it. A few good tracks but not really distinct to stand on its own. I have PK's From The Well and SK's Earthed but don't really have much representation of the less-than-full-Church output. Whammo were great for selection and prompt ordering/shipping. Wonderful experience with them!!

Posts: 52 (06/21/2002 17:14) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	My 2 cents: I think you should definitely pick up the re-issue of Remindlessness by S.K. Next I'd higly recommend the Refomation disc. Also, IMO the best MWP album is "In Reflection." A very trippy, sparesely recorded, fantastically written album, moody and surreal and less "poppy" than his other releases. The re-issue on CD was remastered and the sound quality is an improvement over the super-rare vinyl release. Happy listening!

Posts: 905 (02/19/2003 11:52) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Refo: is still a top choice, evening music, red wine with this one instead of other intoxicants, not quite dinner music, but when you eat alone a lot who cares, veranda if you have one, in spring or fall Narcosis + is very good. "Space" and "English Kiss" (french for a french kiss) are of the Gilt Trip (dark ambient horror movie mood music/and new age) type only with the lyrics to boot. "Fall In Love" is often a good opener on compilations I make, S.K. in a narrative spoken word mode that works very well.
