(Since there wasn't an individual thread for this album here I'm starting it, had there been a thread I would have used the title below for this post)
First Impressions From The Well
One of the "advantages" of not having been able to get hold of solo material as it came out is that when you finally get it is new and can be surprising. I just got this CD last weekend, it seems my destiny to be a Church fan, as it was an unexpected find in a Half Price Books store, in an almost unplanned visit. The incredible part is that it was on the sales bin, and I got it for $3.65... had these people known how much this could have fetched on eBay... Other people's trash can be someone else's treasure.
I have Water Rites, and had heard the Iridescence tracks, but it is From the Well that has made me appreciate Peter's solo work and has finally convinced me about getting all his solo work, the opinions posted here had me almost there, now the music has me convinced.
For some reason I liked Peter's vocals here more than in Water Rites. Somehow halfway through my first hearing of From the Well his singing just clicked for me, and my appreciation for his voice went up.
My first impression was quite positive. Melodie's voice is beautiful, and the addition of the children's voice to some songs is charming even if whimsical (this may be the first recorded appearance of Neige Koppes, BTW).
There are very good songs here, I'm enjoying this music, and haven't decided which songs I like more, leaving a good impression are In The Wake, Only Wait, Horses in the Sand, The Lost Peace, I Wonder, Desert Flower Bride, Testing 3.2.1. I did also like Pyramid Building (She's Leaving), and Lullaby, but not as much. Nursery Fugue is the only one that left me cold.
Anyway, these are my first impression, thirteen years away from the first impressions of many other Church fans. From The Well was a lucky find and I'm quite glad that I finally got to hear it and I'm certainly enjoying it.
