Posts: 4817 (12/04/2001 08:51) Faith Healer Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : kilbeyside, koppesside Remove this ad I know that Steve Kilbey and Peter Koppes were in a glam-esque band called Baby Grand, but I just read something that I found befuddling..... Baby Grand was mentioned at a Vox-related website. Someone stated that BG did a cover of 'Walk Away Renee', that it was over the top. But they ended by saying the band went on to become The Hooters (yikes). Anyone have knowledge on this subject? Weren't The Hooters from Oz? Ease my troubled mind... Australia has produced some very ordinary bands (Uncanny X-men, Pseudo Echo etc etc), but we cannot claim the Hooters. They were definately not from these shores. SK briefly talks about BG in A+I video, but you get the impression they weren't around for long. They only version of Walk Away Renee that I know of is sort of a Ballad. I don't know if SK has ever done it. Who wrote the song anyway...? Danny

The eclectic cult band the Hooters was formed in Philadelphia in 1978 and quickly gained a massive regional following with their unusual mix of pop, ska, folk and reggae. In 1983 the Hooters released an independent LP, Amore, which sold more than 100,000 copies; however, sudden popularity caused tensions in the band, which quickly lead to a breakup. Frontmen Eric Bazilian (vocals/guitar) and Rob Hyman (vocals/organ) were asked to write material for a new artist named Cyndi Lauper; inspired by their renewed collaboration and Lauper's early success (Hyman co-wrote her No. 1 hit "Time After Time"), Bazilian and Hyman re-formed the band in late 1983 with several new members and signed to Columbia Records. By 1985 the Hooters were more popular than ever -- their more pop-oriented major-label debut Nervous Night spawned several hit songs, including the MTV smash "And We Danced," and the group appeared before millions as the opening act for the Philadelphia Live Aid concert. Though their next few albums did not receive as much mainstream attention, the Hooters retained a cult following into the '90s, and were able to successfully stay on major labels, jumping from Columbia to MCA and most recently to Mercury... ...but who really cares?!?!

I would have loved to blame them on on the Aussies, but I was pretty sure they were our creation. Oh well they all can't be good.

Glow Worm Posts: 2742 (12/05/2001 20:56) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	That 60s band The Association (whom I've always been fond of for some reason), and who had some interesting hits with "Windy", "Along Comes Mary", "Never My Love", and so forth, reunited in the mid 90s and put out a cd containing a cover of "Walk Away Renee". It just might be the worst CD I've ever heard! It sounds like it was all recorded on a sythesizer's 8-track sequencer... and all of the patches were cheesy. Very unpalatable. "Renee" was actually the only bearable song on it, but that was only because it was recognizable.

But on the flipside of that, they were also responsible for "Cherish", which is the audio definition of trite(rhymes with shite)...... %^) Jk

Tony (who played guitar and sang bass in his high school's song and dance group--"The Southtown Singers"..."java jive" anyone?) "All you need is love."

I too am enamoured of great harmonies, & I will admit that as a lad of 13/14...I loved "Cherish".... But to listen to it now makes me nauseous.... And even though the harmonies may be great...even the best Harmonies dont make a crap song good. Tony, forgive my brattitude... %^) Jk see LEAVE IT by YES.....

I agree, harmonization is only one aspect of a good song.* One thing that The Association did do that was pretty groovy was that 60s thing of mixing all of the drums either to the left or to the right in the stereo spectrum. Very cool, if used properly. I tried to do something like this on my last cd, but I don't know how well I pulled it off... Tony =see anything* by Yes from the 80s... "All you need is love."

In fact, when their original bass player left, our middle school middle teacher tried out for the band. It was supposedly down to one of two finalists...and he did not get picked. Given the other comments about the band here, maybe he should consider himself lucky. - Steve
