And I am now entranced by it. I have unfortunately only heard Love/Era, upto this point (the shame)... and wasn't really "clicking" with it. But this??? I immediately took a liking for. It has a really nice feel to it, quite mellow... I was wondering how those that are more familiar with PK's solo work rate this recording... and how it fits into his whole body of work? Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy Take a Bow, Into the Bright Light, Comes As No Surprise, and What's the Matter? (nice strumming). Too many keyboards. Drum machine is ...well, a drum machine, circa 1988. I am humbled and awed by Peter Koppes' talent. Manchild and Myth is just not my favorite PK effort. One of the instrumental pieces features a string pad which sounds very Moody Blues, which I think is nice. Still, I prefer other PK solo work. Cheers, Noel no method, no guru, no teacher

I can appreciate criticism of the drum machines, although they aren't nearly as bothersome to me on this album as they are on "From the Well." Nor is M&M especially strong lyrically. But M&M is probably the album that makes the strongest case for PK as the key "textural" element of the Church. In terms of basic "sound", M&M more closely resembles a Church album than contemporary works by SK or MWP. Its weaknesses are really only evident when you sit down and listen for them. I find that M&M makes for a good listen when I want that "Church-like" atmosphere around my home without the "heaviness" I associate with Kilbey-fronted Church music.

Space Saviour Posts: 2161 (06/23/2002 03:00) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The first time I heard this LP i thought that it sounded really dated (aside from being on vinyl) but the more I played it, the more fantastic sounds I picked up on. It's well worth giving this one some time to develop - it's a great piece of work and you can really see PK's influence in The Church as a musician. Thank you to the lovely person who sent me the cd! I probably should it has a dreamy quality about it as Brian pointed out, (even happy and upbeat) but I like the live musicians and sound of his later albums better.

I think Love Era is Pete at his best, and look forward to buying Simple Intent. I suppose I would say there is a hypnotic element to M&M as I would often forget it was playing each time I tried to get into it. Nothing about it grabbed my ear. To my chagrin, it is among the few Church CDs I have sold to stores in town.

Posts: 2995 (03/28/2003 12:43) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	What a coincidence that I got this yesterday (found it on eBay cheap) and this thread receives a reply saving me the need for finding it. I like it, I'll have to absorb it more but Take a Vow I liked immediately. It may sound dated at times, but it turns out that I like 80s music too much for my own good. I've been hesitant to acquire solo material, but when I've taken the chance I've found it worth it. Damn it Mr. Koppes, why did you have to create such enticing music? With the past albums I now have and how much I like Reward now I'll have to get your more recent albums too. I'll make you pay for this by getting them autographed when I get the chance.

At one time, when I was young and naive (and didn't have internet access) I thought this and "From the Well" were Peter Koppes' only solo CDs.
