Great, Great track!! Wow!! Going into it, my ears were expecting to hear same song as the MP3 file taken from end of SK's A&I disc. Was I blown away by the back ground vocals and overall different sound and background keyboards. You know, I could see it getting some radio play on certain radio stations (as opposed to the usual 0 play). It could happen. I know I'll be pestering the FSU college run station.

Numbers is much better than I anticipated and exceeded my expectations. I to was expecting something similar to the A&I sneak preview. I especially like the back up harmony vocals and how the acoustic guitar adds depth. I think it has great potential for as live played track. The soft mix is equally impressive. The drum track, simple acoustic guitar and synths definately give it a different and softer feel. I think the vocals are more highlighted in this version. I think they are both easy on the ears and catchy in their own style. Cannot wait to hear more from this album. These releases bid well for this new CD. They are moving in a great direction and our minds are going to be blown!

Re: NUMBERS | ||

I honestly think Numbers is the best song The Church have done so far.
Yes some of you may think i'm getting carried away here ,but honestly this song defines perfection. The Church have never sounded better , and gosh have they re-invented themselves. Taking every instrument individually,the sound in general,Steve's vocals and and lyrics all blended together make a heavenly track that no one else can touch. In 2002 , 21 years after they started The Church are not only still relevant but essential....crucial. What scares me is that the rest of the album won't be in this direction (Radiance /Seen It although wonderful tracks are Church tracks).....Numbers is The Church having done their homework ...knowing how to sound in 2002. Many bands flirt with new sounds but are unsuccessful in finding a happy medium where they've created a new sound but still are faithful to what they originally do. The Church have succeeded in this and one must applaud them for it. If one compares this single to the one from HoB ,one can realise that the band have now found their niche . I wish i had a better vocab to express myself.....to show my appreciation enough.This track has thrilled me to no end. I have played it non stop for the past 4 days. And what about the mix and b-sides. jean |

Jean,
I have to echo everything you have said. Right on the nose. You have expressed it quite well. I really think Seen it Coming has some potential. As I remember the sample we got was a Monitor mix, so I am really hopeful we are going to be suprised with a much fuller sounding and stronger instrument backed song once its released. It might just amaze us just like Numbers did. I really liked Radiance the way it was. I damn sure like the direction they are going! Undo is great. Reminds me a little of the Porpoise song, and has the Beatlesque sound to it. Which isn't negative. Its actually really awesome turned up loud (when the family's not around). It really takes off strong and swirls around. Oxydental is good, but in my opinion, not real strong, but great to collect and listen to from time to time. Where I'm a little concerned is radio airplay. I haven't really heard anything thats air playable. At least basicing it on whats in rotation in our area: Denver/the mountains. I hope I'm wrong. But I understand that one of the new songs Chromium Plating (I think thats it?) may have a shot. Duane |

Re: NUMBERS | ||

Hi Duane
I think Undo is a great psychedelic number.What strikes me about the song is that they didn't do the obvious and put some sitar in.Instead they opted for a wall of sound,layers of guitar.I think Steve had a field day here doing not necessarily what he does best but what he enjoys most.....singing in rhymes throwing in those lines/lyrics ...that define the man! I think this track would have fitted in perfectly in the refo:mation album. Oxydental also took me by surprise but once again I'm not disapointed.The flirtation with electronic and lounge music goes to show how the band know what is important in the music scene today. I don't think the band expect to sell tons of their new album...but....they want to be recognized with the mature buying public.....the ones that fork out their money to get cds by the likes of post rock/chill out acts.The bands ability to expand their horizons has impressed immensely. I loved them the way they were.....but even more so now. |

Duane, Jean....
I agree with your thoughts on Numbers and the CD single as a whole. I too sense a Beatlesque flavor, even throughout the entire disc. Not so much a clear reflection of the Beatles, rather I hear some of their sensibilities in the aural atmosphere, melodies and singing. Parts of Oxydental remind me of unreleased songs that John Lennon and Syd Barrett recorded at Abbey Road when The Pink Floyd was at work on The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn in 1967. I also thought of The Porpoise Song when I first heard Undo. Regardless of influences, The Church is ever evolving and their catalog has grown in size and stature. Each addition brings me more delight and I now enjoy their art more than ever. Ben |

1. Numbers - Great track. I like the way it builds in intensity. Some superb drumming from Tim, and dare I say, very Ploogish. My only complaint is that Steve's vocals are a bit buried.
2. Numbers Soft Mix - I actually like this one a bit better than the main track. A bit more stipped back but with all the same elements that makes the other track so good. Love the way acoustic is brought out in this mix. 3. Undo - My first thought was "Too Beatleish", but they've taken this one somewhere altogether different after the first two or three minutes. Lyrically, both this and Numbers are very sharp and pointed, almost sounding bitter. 4. Oxydental - I like it, strangely enough (ugh, drum machines). I'm sure a lot of people won't though, for the same reasons they don't like b-sides like Texas Moon or Nightmare. Cheers Tim |

I'm surpised you found Steve's vocals a bit buried on Numbers. Compared to HOB the vocal mix is a dream here.I can't get over why his vocals where so muffled on HOB. I also think the electronic vibe given to Oxydental is superb. Come on we're in 2002 one has to accept the fact that electronic music is very important in the music scene today.Dare I say,that most electronic artists today are way more interesting than guitar based bands ...and The Church have acknowledged this. The Beatles comparisons have worried me a bit too.I'd rather have The band being compared with todays good bands. To create new interest and win new fans The Church had to re-vitalize themselves and with the Numbers ep I think they have been successful. jean |

I haven't stopped listening to my copy since i bought it a few days ago.
Numbers is pure Church, for my money. Undo gradually sucks you into the song. I love it. Oxydental had to grow on me,i don't like the start too much,but i like it all the same. Cheers Archie |

Re: NUMBERS | ||

I listened to the Number ep intensely again last night with a friend.
He was quick to note that Undo reminded him of an English band called The Real People.And rightly so.These guys had a highly acclaimed album in 1991.It was a superb album filled with psychedelic pop songs.It got a bit overshadowed by The La's album though. Nonetheless the amount of feedback/distortion and Steve's vocals make this song another to add to the great tracks by The Church. I can't get enough of Oxydental....this is a tremendous number.Never have the Church been so adventurous. I have already written about the electro/lounge flirtations. Well ,one can also see this as Church's first lo-fi song. People like Beck,Pavement and late Blur come to mind.Splendid. |

"Parts of Oxydental remind me of unreleased songs that John Lennon and Syd Barrett recorded at Abbey Road when The Pink Floyd was at work on The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn in 1967." Revolver.
God, I'd love to hear these tracks, are they available online somewhere? Yeah, I love this single to. It sounds incredibly fresh and if Radiohead had released this it would be enjoying worldwide exposure and be hailed as a classic. Both Oxydental and Undo also hit the mark for me. I think I already prefer this stuff to HOB (which I also thought was better than the two previous releases) and hopefully the album will be worth the extended wait. Cheers, Brian |

Fellow Wombers...
I'm ecstatic now that the Womb's been reborn BUT, I feel clueless! Where did 'Numbers' come from? I've seen the postings on acquiring 'Dabble' but what's the story on 'Numbers'? Plainly put- where do I GET 'Numbers'? Thanks. Fraulein. Update! No longer clueless! Just ordered 'Dabble', 'Numbers' and 'Persia/RL' CDs from Whammo. Can't wait to hear what you're all hearing... Fraulein. |

Oxydental is now my favourite track on the ep. I had an exam yesterday morning and while trying to concentrate on the questions at hand I had oxydental jones floating around my head. The piano is also a nice touch and should complement the band nicely live.

Altres...
Sorry I can't offer more information than this: One track I recall from the Abbey Road sessions is "What A Shame Mary Jane Had A Pain At The Party." Another was "Piece of Mind" or "Peace of Mind." I'm not sure what Syd's involvement was on the latter--it's been nearly 20 years since I heard the bootleg LP these songs were from. I think there were more, but don't recall just now. I imagine some web sites describe this interesting union. I want to stress that the new Church tracks remind me of some Beatles' characteristics; I'm not saying they sound like The Beatles. This is pleasing as I hold both bands in the highest regard. Regardless of The Church's influnces what comes out with each new release is stellar. Ben |

Fraulien (and others),
I ordered this single from whammo and it took a while to get to my house (just this saturday.) I was dying hearing all the reviews and not being able to hear the songs. Altres was kind enough to provide MP3 files of the 4 tracks and I will be glad to forward them via email to you and anyone else. Just send a brief note to my email along with some sort of proof the single is in the mail (part of email receipt from whammo or such) Cheers, Tom |

I finally got my copy from Whammo(!) and...deja vu... I've heard this somewhere before. I racked my brain all day yesterday and then it hit me: when Napster was still going I downloaded something called Sneakpreview 2001 by the Church and this was it. Somebody had this posted back in March. I only ever managed to get 30 odd seconds of it, it's wonderful to finally hear how it ends.
If this is any indication of the quality of tracks to come, it will be worth the wait. Joey |

Re: re:Numbers | ||

Now that i,ve had a little more time to listen and take in the new single,i have a few changed thoughts on what i prevoiusly posted.
Numbers - This is probably the best descriptor of where The Church are musically at, from their last few albums to now. But the sound to me, sounds a lot like it could have been written for the Pharmakoi album. Numbers (soft mix) - If you want a more clearer version, well here it is Undo - If this has been left off the album, then just let me say, bring on the album. Again i think this song would have slotted nicely into the Pharmakoi album To tell the truth this sounds very Steve solo stuff Oxydental - I have become an Oxydental sucker. The more i listen to this the more i love it. And once again i think Steve has had a lot more of a say in this song than any of the others. It will become one of my favorites. Cheers Archie. |
