Although much of this singles collection is available elsewhere, about half of these tracks are only available here. So its sort of a pre-AQSAS. Although the A-side of their first single, "She Never Said", is inexplicably omitted, I believe all the other singles up through Heyday are here. Most noteworthy for the inclusion of all the tracks from the "Too Fast for You" double-single that represents Ploog's first Church recordings and arguably the point where the Church "sound" really starts to coalese. Someone else -- was it Fraulein? -- called this the perfect intro to pre-Starfish Church. The CD version (mine anyway) lacks SKs song-by-song commentary, but you can get this off of Shadow Cabinet if you're interested. Comments anyone? Michael aka Random

Forgive me if I'm wrong but the b-side to "She Never Said" was "In A Heartbeat" which IS on hindsight, it was "Busdriver", the b-side to "Unguarded Moment" that was not put on HINDSIGHT. Thank the gods/goddesses that I have that. You must know that I am not at home right now to confirm this, so I might be WAY off the mark...but I have a hunch.... Enough about my posture. Jk %^)

Then I found it two years later for $22. Oh well. Anyone else ever have this happen to them? --Sometimes, on lazy days, I agree with SK - Trance Ending is the best song on the collection. --My introduction to the word "inappropriatesville" - I wonder if SK would ever use this word in a song? The SK song-by-song notes are great. --If we all still used vinyl records, Side Four (from Shadow Cabinet to Tantalized) would be one of the best Church "sides" in existence. Wonderful. --Too bad Arista didn't do "Hindsight Vol. 2" with Starfish, GAF, P=A and SA/SE. That way we could hear Texas Moon next to Reptile, The Feast next to Metropolis, Fog next to Feel, and Room Full of Diamonds next to Two Places at Once. I'll not cover everything cause it'll take ages and bore the shit out of everyone but I'll speak about the more esoteric tracks. In a Heartbeat - very "of it's time". New wave transistor guitar sound, strangely inc "Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" riff midway through. Kilbey reminds me of Terry Hall on this one somehow and the production is also similar to the first Specials album. Not a bad beginning, they must of known some magic was happening. Too fast for You - Soundtrack to many summer trips. I love this track and anyone who's heard it will know why. Tear it All Away - Check out that bouncing bassline. Again sings out to me like childhood. If I had to thank these guys for anything it would for being the soundtrack to my late teenage years. Sisters - Child like talking, layered together and textured like gauze.Nice modulation midway through as well. Fraulein - Amphetemine buzz track. Urgent and direct with rumbling and farting bassline. You've Got To Go - Cod funk in the vein of She Never Said. I can never remember this track without hearing it. Some great guitar interplay. The Golden Dawn - Sounds like a song that the vocals were never added too. Could never get the Crowely reference myself. "And what's all that whispering in the background about" anyway? Life Speeds Up - Lyrical guitars drive this lyrical vehicle. Big drum sounds midway fuels freakout section to ignition. Finshed in wedding bell chimes. Autumn Soon - Classic eastern jangle track with great lyrics. Almost, but not quite, ruined by bad gated drum stutterings. Hopefully will be cleaned up one day to be included on a reissued "Seance". Someone Special - Beautiful song. Suffers from the rifle fire drumming again but great lyrics and lovely use of dynamics. As You Will - Subdued and apologetic vocals undersell this fabulous track dramatically. After hearing more of Koppes' solo releases though I have warmed to the delivery somewhat and hear it now with new ears. The View - Clear sky mysticism, cloudlike in delivery and warm in the sun. Great chord structures and vocal delivery and one of the treasures worth owning this for. Trance Ending - Just as an instrumental Florian Frike I'm sure would have been delighted for this to inhabit a Popol Vuh album (high praise) and the lyrics only enhance it. Like a field in moonlight. If you don't own this get out there now and buy this album: I'm sure it's still available in a slimeline release. Enough wonderful moments for more than one lifetime. I once got criticised here for including it in my top five Church albums. Fascists. Brian PS. Busdriver would have sat nicely at the start of the first disk IMO. I like the track.

If you can't remember "You've Got to Go" here's a mnemonic .. A courier invokes your name you know or how bout .. " In the Tuscan dusk, swimming under moons of musk a visitor waits for you to show......pardon me, i dig the song, and yes Sisters, Too Fast For you and Tear it all away skip like mad on my American OSAH, though why I choose to type that here I just don't know.... Posts: 34 (12/21/2003 17:57) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I was eleven years old when The Unguarded Moment was released. I was twelve when Almost With You came out. Even way back then I knew I was a Church fan although I didn't actually buy any Church records until Hindsight came out. This compilation was the first Church album that I owned and therefore has a special place in my heart. I feel like I know every note and beat of every song - that's how much I played it. My first copy was on tape (two tapes actually) but I own it on CD now, of course. The only thing that has always bugged me is the years in the title. It should be 1980-1985. Is that being too finicky? "The Night is Very Soft" was and still is my favourite track off this album. The lines "I've got a milk white electric guitar/Walked in the shop and I peeled off the notes" have always seemed somehow incongruous with the rest of the lyrics to this song IMO. And yes, I can hear the six-string bass. : )

I found this one as well as the "Almost Yesterday 1981 -1990" compilation. I was torn between the 2, and almost bought only "Hindsight" because it had more songs on it that I didn't have, but ended up buying both, because AY had extensive liner notes. "Hindsight" is a great CD if you want a generous sampling of the band's early work, or if you are a collector looking for the early b-sides, which are all included (except "Busdriver", unfortunately). I also like SK's insights about each song in the liner notes. "Somewhere in the wilderness, you wander like a river, crossing the wheatfields and crying to the sorry ocean. You're crying to the sorry ocean, wrapped in the arms of night."

This one arrived on my doorstep the other day and I have been playing it nonstop. I was a little hesitant to buy this since I really didn't want yet another cd with the early singles on it. Since I didn't get the remasters discussed earlier in the thread, all of these b-sides were new to me and I'm loving them. I had read the SK song comments before on Shadow Cabinet but seeing official SK lyrics included in the liner notes was a big surprise - not sure I'd seen that before. All in all I'm pleased with the package and agree with the person who said this is an essential part of the back catalog.
