I must say, there are light beers elsewhere in the world: There is even a light beer I enjoy: Amstel Light I recomend Amstel, yes, even the "light", it is not light in flavor. Heck, I have even tried Amstel Free (when I visited France). Best non-alcholic beer I've ever tasted. Note that Australia (and maybe other countries) call "light" beer a low alcohol beer (I learned that from this very thread!). I'll toast to brews from New Belgium and Pyramid, both are excellent breweries. But I should note this: offering as an example of the best that USA can offer in beer a brewery that took its name (New Belgium) precisely from the country that they took as inspiration for their brews only reinforces my point: Belgian beers are among the best in the world. Noel: You are right that the USA is a valid beer producer. Any European that snobbishly denies it is ignorant or silly. But Reid's warning applies: if you want good American beer you have to look for it. In Europe I get the impression that it is almost the opposite: if you want crappy beer you have to look for it (or just ask for a Corona ) I've praised San Francisco Anchor Steam before. Great beer. Anything I've tried from that brewery is great. I've said this before too: I don't like Arrogant Bastard Ale, I like hops as a note of flavor, not as a the main ingredient and certainly not in tastebud killing portions. They're not worthy... of my beer money! BTW: Even if I can't get the great USA microbrews in Mexico I can still get some good Mexican beers and some European, even the Canadian ones I mentioned above. I even get some strange brews every now and then... right now I have two Thai beers (two different brands) waiting in my fridge! Everybody has opinions: I have them, you have them. And we are all told from the moment we open our eyes, that everyone is entitled to his or her opinion. Well, thats horsepuckey, of course. Posts: 4817 (12/18/2007 05:31) Faith Healer Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Last night I had the pleasure of trying two artisan ales made in the ancient Scottish tradition. First up: Fraoch. Heather ale has been brewed in Scotland since at least 2000 B.C. It was not nearly as floral as I had expected. Rather it was a pleasant complex ale. Great for everyday drinking if you like its particular malty flavor. I give it 6/10. Next. Alba. Pine and Spruce ale! I wish I had more of this to form a more thorough opinion. The spruce notes overwhelm the pine. Very rich ale which somehow avoids heaviness. One can taste winter, the forest, and hints of wood. The mind concocts images of firelight gatherings. A triumph of a drink. 9/10. across the endless sky we are deployed

The fact that they are not ice cold, and that they are not as fizzy, being hand pumped instead of pushed by CO2, didn't bother me at all, they tasted good and that's what matters. Also the sheer variety of brands was great, and awesome given that in Mexico you either get Cuauhtemoc-Moctezuma or Modelo brands as your only choices in most restaurants and bars. It's gotten better, there is more variety of imports now but the Mexican beer duopoly still dominates. Also, not long ago I read that there was an article in a scientific journal on whether Guinness travelled well, with the authors concluding (after sampling themselves the goods, IIRC, in different countries) that the closer to Ireland you were the better the Guinness tasted, in my own statistically insignificant couple of tastings of Guinness in UK pubs I would say they are right.

I tend to prefer beers that are at least reasonably strong and distinctively flavoured. Couple of my favourite Australian beers are Coopers Sparkling (aka Coopers Red) and Cascade Export Stout (not to be confused with various other Cascade Stout species that I tend to avoid because they give me hiccups.)

Columbus Posts: 977 (11/04/2011 23:09) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I posted this on Google+ originally, but I believe this forum needs civilized posts and that means beer related posts. ––––––––– I watched a program in Discovery Channel that states that civilization started for one particular reason: Beer There's some logic to it actually, most antropologists say that civilization, the building of cities, started because of agriculture, but there's less agreement on why and how people started cultivating grains. The theory here is that if hunter-gatherer humans collected some barley and it fermented spontaneously into a beer that would have been a good motivation to start cultivating more barley and making more beer. That makes more sense than proposing that it was to make bread. So there you have it, we owe civilization, and culture, to beer. The quote that "beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy" was not said by Benjamin Franklin as commonly misattributed, but it does remain a great phrase. That kind of revelation could only be celebrated with a spontaneously fermented beer (i.e. a lambic), in this case it was a Lindemans Apple. Delicious, Belgians do know how to make good beers. I found a page wich links to the documentary in YouTube, if you want to watch it: http://topdocumentaryfilm...ow-beer-saved-the-world/ As mentioned in a different thread I've developed an appreciation for Single Malt Scotch Whiskey, which you could say it's the product of distilling beer (unhopped and unfinished, but fermented barley malt which is basically beer) so good whiskey is another thing we should thank beer for originating. Which reminds me that once, in France, I tasted a beer made from whiskey malt, it wasn't bad, if I remember correctly it had a bit of peat aroma, but it was not very distinctive.

Corona is the best known Mexican beer outside Mexico. Both are considered bad by beer connoisseurs in their countries of origin. I understand that maybe people that do have great beers in their countries might be fascinated by how Corona is different, but different is not the same as good. I also understand that a Belgian style ale would be too heavy too drink in a tropical beach, and that a cask-conditioned English ale would be too warm in warmer weathers, and I could say more about how some beers might be more proper to different places than others... but I'd still say that Corona is bad. If you are in Houston, TX, get a Saint Arnold's Lawnmower, truly refreshing and a real beer. Elsewhere, I'd go for a shandy (beer + lemon/lime soda) before I'd go for a Corona if I wanted to be refreshed. But to talk about good beers again: Currently my favorite Mexican beer is Minerva Pale Ale, in general all beers from Minerva are worth trying but their Pale Ale is excelent.
