The album is also out in MP3 on Amazon and 7Digital among other sites. Lovely, this wasn't that esoteric album after all. I got my MP3's. Can't say much after one listen but the sound is more towards chillout Kilbey Kennedy than I expected. At least on the firstpart of the album. Reappearance at the middle sounds like a start of another part. It's probably the opener of Disc2 on vinyl?

I wrote most of the following after an initial two listens.

  I
listened to this through twice...with an hour or so between. This is
still very much of an initial assessment...it's mostly picking out the
things that struck me -- for good or for bad -- and often the most
satisfying bits take much longer to surface for me. Also, I generally
don't pay close attention to lyrics on the first few listens...sometimes
they do stand out though -- rather I try to get an overall feel for the
songs.

The Privateer -- Very cinematic...I felt as if I was
watching the beginning of a grand, expensively produced movie in a big
theatre. Really like it. The first time through I did find the
background voice/chatter at the end annoying (although I found them
effective at the beginning of the song) and felt it went on too long.
One second listen I didn't find that nearly as annoying and the outro
seemed a lot...

Ok, seriously. This is just a ridiculously good album.
I was wondering to myself if this might be my favourite Kilbey release. But with such a vast back catalogue, it's tough to put one on top of the others.
The Blurred Crusade is great.
I have a real soft spot for Seance.
Heyday is wonderful.
Starfish is where it all began for me.
Unearthed & The Slow Crack are full of unusual gems.
With Back With Two Beasts they took another step.
Painkiller is a storm.
Untitled #23 is a profoundly satisfying whole.
But with Life Somewhere Else, the music is richer, the singing more varied, confident & accomplished, and the lyrics see Steve at the top of his game.
There, I've convinced myself.
Best Kilbey release?
Yes.
I do not make music or pretned to know how so this is simply my opinion.

Rating System:

***** Amazing track right there with artist best work.
**** Essential Album track.
*** Good Album Track.
** Different, experimental not usual preference but worth hearing.
* Should of been cut or B-side.

Track listing:
1) The Privateer **** Slow grower, love the sweeping sound throughout the song.
2) Life Somewhere Else **** Yes it is similar to Witch Hunt in vocal delivery, better song overall in my opinion.
3) Song of the City ***** 1st Song that was stuck in my head, beautiful.
4) Old Black Spirit ***** Very personal song and sad, nice buildup of instrumentation throughout.
5) Recoil *** The album changes gears here, reminds me of Twilight Singers which is a good thing. I would of...

Listened to it about ten to twenty times now. My thoughts:

"Life Somewhere Else" picks us up where the first Isidore record dropped us off some years ago - in a cosy cottage near the warm, deep waters of Isidore Sound, where we could listen to the first album again and again and again. It's like only a few days have past since then, therefore the new record and me, we just say "hello" to each other briefly and then immediately engage in aural communcation. It's all there again: the homogeneous, distinctive and recognizable sound, the atmosphere, the motifs. But there's more as well, because the new record doesn't simply repeat the first one's ideas. It takes a tiny little steps forward, staying on known ground firmly but also stretching beyond it at the same time.

As a whole, the new album seems a bit more coherent than the first one but I can't tell exactly why. "The Privateer" is a good opener and you know immediately who you're listening to. Then on it goes to the...
