Hi all.

For the second month running and the 3rd time in 6 months, there's a request on the letters page for a feature on the band.

Given all the letters the mag must receive then I can only imagine it's something they must be considering.

I hope Tiare/Marty are in contact with Mojo to help push for this.

Top 15 spacemindscape trip songs

I thought I'd like to see (and try a playlist, listened to on headphones w/ dim lighting)
the top 15 songs (<---pseudo album length) where the music, singing, lyrics, etc take you off on flights.

Criteria:
1. Nostalgia doesn't count. You may have great memories that take you somewhere when listening to particular songs. Unfortunately, I don't have those memories
2. If you can't decide on a order, then try weaving them so that you take me (us) on a journey
3. Any period or mood will do... dark... spacey....acoustic... etc
4. Finally, limit the list to Church releases... (No side projects... at least at this point!

I've been upgrading my audiophile listening equipment, and would love to kick start 2012 on this spacemindscape journey. Will you join???

hi there,

apologies if this is in the incorrect section but I've no idea where else to put it!

Does anybody know how to contact the churchmerch people?

A purchase that was marked as 'shipped' over 2 weeks ago has yet to arrive. (I'm in Australia) and I am unable to contact churchmerch to discover what the situation is. The contacts section on the official site doesn't give the option of churchmerch and there is no response to my emails to orders@thechurchband.net

any suggestions gratefully received.

Topics of hotelwomb.com with over 10 000 views / ads

There are small boxes in the end of HW that tell some statistics of the topics and users of hotelwomb.com. For some reason it didn't reveal which topics had the most views but I wanted to know that so here is a list of all topics that have gone over 10000 views. Recently the band has had a lot more exposure with new albums, tours, projects and awards than before and many topics now rack more than 10 000 views. That is roughly around 10-20 times more than in 2007. The topics don't have more replies than before, usually less, it's only the views that have gone up. In the olde days, 2007 that is, it was possible to chuck in $6 and get 30 000 page views for the site without ads and that lasted for months. Now that the amount of views is around 7000 / day the ad free time you get with $6 lasts only a week if that. So it means that ads are here to stay if some of the older readers have wondered about those.

So hard finding inspiration...how to do the OSAH-champ. In the end I put the 9 original songs and all 7 other early period b-sides in to one big megamix, because I didn't know exactly what songs to drop and what to keep.

The Dynamic Range of the Church

This post may be of interest mostly to audiophiles / audiogeeks. Here goes:

After many years of not really looking, I finally found a tool to measure the dynamic range of digital audio files. (For those unawares: dynamic range is roughly speaking the difference in volume between the loudest and the quietest portions of a sound file.) CDs have gotten significantly louder over the past 15 to 20 years, primarily by compressing the dynamic range to raise the overall volume of the sound. If you're wondering what impact dynamic range compression can have on a digital sound file - just look up "Loudness War" on Wikipedia, or Google the same term. You'll find no shortage of opinions on the subject.

I used the tool to come up with dynamic range estimates for Church albums released from 1981 to 1994, except for Seance (my computer will not read the EMI Australia disc properly.). I was specifically interested in comparing the original U.S. CD releases on Arista to the remastered...

Original album had 13 songs and I wanted to have at least 1 to make it even number of 14 but then thought why not have them all and make it 20?
This could be interesting because of the many stories about which songs should or should not be on the album.

hey, did anyone ever see the movie Calvin Marshall? about a college student in junior college who tries to make a baseball team, has the spirit, but not the talent. Steve Zahn plays the coach. very good movie, imo. I was surprised to hear The Unguarded Moment in one of the scenes. How cool is that? and they picked a not typical Church song to feature.

Its on Hulu Plus, if anyone has that. I'm sure you could find it on Netflix also. Good movie, good music.

Downloaded and listened to Radiohead's The King of Limbs the other day. It's courting some debate here in England for being a 'difficult' album. Bereft of tunes, some are saying; others that it's a grower.

I'm patient. I'll give it some spins. It's growing on me.

The best insight was probably Alexis Petridis writing in The Guardian who ends his four (out of five) star review with this:

As The King of Limbs proves, when it works it's glorious, but that impulse doesn't always yield perfect results. Still, listening to Radiohead try is never less than intriguing; after all, their peers aren't trying at all.

A homage? A funny co-incidence? Such a common image that it could have been done more often?

I don´t know, but the bold black letters and the graphic on white is quite familiar look. The lines from the heart to the songs was done in OSAH back cover too.
