Still buzzing from seeing another in the running for show of the year for me along with the BB King's Future Past Present and Black Ships first and only show in London. I got a great surprise in seeing BSL at this their 2nd show ever, the band has memebers of the Chamsvox, amazing drumming talent John Lever and one of their guitarists. Studio BSL has Mark Burgess on it but he just watched them intentely. Finally seeing the Chameleons after loving them for over 20yrs was almost too much to take. The show started and stopped after about a minute, the drum monitors went out and John stopped mid-song. Talk about a buzz kill! After a short pause they were up and running through most of Script of the Bridge. I had gotten the ok from Mark Burgess to record the show, see below, and on review the bass is painfully out of tune, like every 3rd note. I didn't hear it during the gig but it's like a bad tooth you cannot stop hitting, painful! One thing is both bands used the same...

I'm not sure how many ambient music fans are here, but I was quite saddened to hear about the death of Barry Craig, better known by the pseudonym "A Produce", on September 4, 2011 at the far too young age of 59. I've only been a fan of his since 2007, when I first heard 2 of his tracks on Lynn Augstein's "Borealis" DVD. His contributions were "Sea of Breath" and "Native Pulse", and when I heard the latter, I had to find out who this was! I eventually collected his entire discography. His music is along a similar vein to Robert Rich and Steve Roach, of whom I am also big fans of, but he definitely had his own style - when you heard his music, you'd know it was his. A lot of it had more melody than the minimalistic ambient, but he was quite capable of minimalistic, as well, again with his own style. Some of his tracks included the addition of electric guitars. My personal favorite CDs of his include "Reflect Like a Mirror, Respond...

It's rare that the producer's influence can be appreciated fully, we usually get the final product and do not hear how the band or an external producer took a raw idea and made it a fabulous song, or how a demo was pushed up into a great song by production.

I personally have realized this more with some rereleases, with bonus tracks featuring early demos, really interesting sometimes how the essence is there but it's only the final form that seems great.

I think there's another situation that can showcase how different production can make a good song better: the case of alternate versions, or remixes.

A personal favorite example of mine in that respect is that I prefer Radiant 1934 Remix to the original Radiance. No wonder why, it has very catchy tunes but also shoegazy and dream poppy elements. Not too complicated stuff really, but very well done. Moving Further Away was my fave from this album. Long, groovy and driving tune but with ambient elements in the end.

In a nice twist Horrors frontman Faris Badwan released another album almost simultaneously. One could say it is a Kilbey-move to release a duo album with a female muse right after the biggest hit of the main band. Lovely noir pop with an old touch but updated to 2011. I don´t know if I liked this sideproject more than Skying. Maybe. Time will tell.

After the disappointing "Dust", and the somewhat better "Unshattered", this year we have the release of Peter Murphy's "Ninth". I think this is one of his best albums in a long time! It definitely has a much more hard rock edge to it, and in many ways reminds me of the best songs off "Deep". I've only had it for a few days now, so I'm not all familiar with all of the tracks yet, but early favorites are "Velocity Bird", "Seesaw Sway", "Peace to Each", and "The Prince and Old Lady Shade". Overall, though, from the listens I've given it so far, I think it's a really great album and more a return to form than "Unshattered" was. (I'd like to give a more in-depth overview of it, but it's late and I'm tired, so it will have to wait until later).

Any other Cars fans here? I was excited when I heard they had a new album coming in May, their first new album since 1987 (and Ric Ocasek swore, many times, that the band would never reunite). I bought "Move Like This" on Tuesday, and played it 3 times that day alone. (I bought the Best Buy version, with the bonus tracks). It still sounds like The Cars, and almost picks up where they left off, as if they never broke up. There are a lot of nods to their older work ("Keep On Knocking" has an intro similar to "Magic", and "Sad Song" has elements of "My Best Friend's Girl"), while remaining new and modern. I think this one will get some heavy rotation in the days to come. It's a shame they waited so long, though, and that Ben Orr couldn't be a part of it.

Brought back a lot of memories from grade school. Like when "Door to Door" came out in 1987, I remember being picked up from school on Fridays, my brother driving, and he'd have...
