Hi fellow Church fans.

I'm a Texas boy, well solidly middle aged guy, that has been a fan of the band since buying Heyday on vinyl way back in '85. Since that time, many bands have come and gone from my personal favorites category but The Church has stood the test of time (well, except for that rut they hit with Sometime Anywhere and the Magician albums, tho' both have worthwhile moments). It's not easy to put into words why they are so damned specical. There's a timeless quality in everything they do and the subtelty in their best work often puts goosebumps on my arms. When I listen and I'm in "the zone" there is a euphoric melancholia that washes over me that no other music that I've heard matches. That feeling, that headspace, that The Church's music opens the door to is what I so appreciate. Real art.

The only regret that I have regarding the band is that I haven't had a chance to see them live as often as I would like. I saw them a few times in 06 and before that...

Hello everybody,
after a long time of hesitance, I simply have to make my entry to Hotel Womb forum.
I don't really know what made me wait so long for my entrance to this brilliant forum. I have been a fan of the Church since early 90's (yep), and have grown into the music firmly.

I'm living in central part of Finland, and as a young adult I had the privilege to attend one of the Church -concerts. Around 1994-5 in Helsinki with only Steve and Marty playing. Ever since I've been looking for an opportunity to attend a Church concert, but so far I've been unlucky. The last European tour was an off-tour for me, because my wife gave birth to our twins around that time (very steve-esque, I know:)).

One of the facts that makes the Church really important for my being, is that I discovered singing because of Steve Kilbey. I found out very soon, I had a quite similar voice to Steve's, and that knowledge has guided my way in making songs and especially singing them....

It was 1995 and I was still in high school and I was so impressed with the song that I went the next day to a record store hoping to find the album were that marvelous song was contained, but in my excitement I forgot the name of the song and could only remember the name of the band, so I asked if they had anything from a band named The Church and they offered me three or four albums. No host, no VJ, no commentary or explanation of any kind, which made everything

Saw them first during the Starfish tour in Raleigh (great show) and have seen them 7 or 8 times since. I've been buying their albums when they came out for the last 25 years but became a bit complacent until I saw them on the 2009 tour and they blew me away...by far the best I've seen them since 87. I missed them earlier this year (didn't come anywhere near Colorado) but I've arranged to see them a couple of times during the upcoming tour..it will be epic.

BTW, my favorite albums are Heyday, P=A, Hologram of Baal and Starfish (even if it is a bit commercial). Glad to see others holding the torch.

I suppose the genesis of my fandom is rooted in a public pool and waterpark somewhere in Mexico during the summer of 1988. I was an 18-year old Jersey boy south of the border with my soccer team. Already a religious Cure, Smiths and New Order fan, I heard both "Under The Milky Way" and "Reptile" over the park's PA system (right after The Cult classic "She Sells Sanctuary" actually.) And I was hooked. ¡Viva la Mexico! I've seen them a dozen or so times since, starting with the Gold Afternoon Fix tour. To this day, I'm amazed at how strong the magic is in their songs, old and new, and how often I turn to them.

I guess one of the reasons I decided to break the ice and actually post is this: One of the first conversations one of my best friends and I ever had was about this band. Have started buying the 1990s and 2000s releases I missed the first time around (This sounds like a common theme amongst the newbies here.).... But for The Church, there is a dizzying number of main releases, compilations, solo works, collaborations, side projects, etc. And since many are imports, others are rarities, an obsession with this band is not an inexpensive undertaking.
